Default My Fresh Start Build Thread

In this thread I am honestly not looking for people's negative opinions. I am looking for any tips or ideas on how to achieve the same concept cheaper, anyone who has the parts I need, connections to people who get quality parts cheaper, or anyone who wants to help.

Now starts the list.

This list is not in order of importance, just list of items I want to gather before I start my build.

The build is on a gc either version 5 or 6 and is a sedan.

Total build budget is set at 12k.

LIST:

Engine:
JDM EJ20g from an 89 to 91 legacy turbo (shortblock)
- Forged pistons and rods (500hp capable)
- Forged crank
(completely rebuilt)

Heads:
JDM V7 or newer STI (AVCS)
- hi rev kit
- slight oversized valve kit
- over port and polish intake (15% increase)
- 272 cosworth STI cams

INTAKE MANIFOLD & TGV'S:
-Top Secret
- whatever I use it will be polished too
- phinolic or finnolic spaced

Intercooler:
- USDM V8 STI
- full perimeter custom (top and bottom) CO2 spray

Turbo and Intake:
- TD05 20g
- relocate 8inches towards passenger side fender
- rotate 20 degrees clockwise
- custom 65mm cold air intake
(cutting restrictions)

Exhaust:
- ceramic coated everything
- Oversized unequal length header (2 - 3mm)
- custom oversized uppipe to match new turbo setup
- 4 inch custom down pipe
- straight 4 inch to axleback
- 1 12 inch resonator to 5 inch tip
Just stared thread more to come was
Thanks

If I had to do it all over again (for like the umpteenth time) I would buy a wrecked STI and swap EVERYTHING over, then worry about upgrading the stock STI setup (in a GC chassis of course).

Unfortunately wrecked USDM STI's didn't even exist back in the day and we didn't have the fraction of options that are available now.

Honestly, the strength of the drivetrain is not that big of a deal in a GC, it's the wiring. IF you swap an olderstyle rotated setup, you're not gonna be able to find parts for cheap. UP, DP, IC, turbos themselves and so on.

If you do a 01(JDM)-02(USDM) WRX/STI setup setup with a non-rotated mount, then you have a bajillion options as far as upgrade parts.

why an ej20g from a legacy turbo? If you're just using the shortblock, it doesn't matter what it came from. It can come from a number of jdm wrxs, stis, and even foresters I believe.

I would say buy this and don't wreck it, or a turbo GC that is in running condition.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2187968

Also this is very cool too and would go back to the roots of Subaru rally, would be a cool project to perfect

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2201226

If it was good enough for Colin then its good enough for me

The ej20g is a great shortblock to start with (because it is a closed deck engine), but finding one from a jdm turbo legacy is a bit more difficult than just finding any ej20g from any jdm legacy, wrx, sti, forester, etc. And the issue with using an older block, is that they get "clapped out", meaning everything is supposed to have good tight tolerances and such, but the actual block is worn out and could potentially fail before anything else.

I know this is rarely discussed/covered in engine builds, but I have seen a few cars that used old engines and the actual engine casing broke just from use and abuse before anything else, and if the engine casing cracks/gets a hole blown out of it, alot of other things are going to get damaged.

Just something to keep in mind. I don't know much else about engine builds lol.

With 12k I think its going to be impossible to have a 40 psi sleeved/stroked GC. Maybe with 20k? Have you put a price on each of those items, not to mention labor/tuning/odds and ends? Beer/pizza/long nights not to mention, all the new cuss words you'll invent.

You'll spend 12k in a motor to rev high enough to make use of the power, a turbo that's efficient enough to make power up at 40psi on a 2.whatever liter motor, and a bottom end that's going to hold together.

You can never trust them damn Nazi's.

Srsly though max, I've seen some old engines blow a hole in the casting, when nothing went wrong. Everything was fine, then boom goes the block.
