Which european car manufacturer did Sears and Roebuck sponsor and supply rally tires to?
The clock is ticking... [This message has been edited by Tangmere (edited March 01, 2001).]

This probably isn't what you're looking for, but Henry & Cindy Krolikowski used to be sponsored by Sears and run Sears tires on their old Dodge Shadow...

The car was the Crafstman 28" Lawn Tractor, with the special SnowPlow option.
Many people don't know this, but that year the FIA was trying to generate more interest in the World Rally Championship. They thought to themselves, "How can we get more Americans interested?" Along came Sears. For the first season, the factory Sears entries were limited to a few select rallies, mainly the Sweden Rally and the RAC, and met with mild success. Although never placing higher than 43rd (they were slightly behind in the technology battle.), they also had no DNF's. Proof that Crafstman really is quality. For 1971, they ran the entire season, however due to increased safety regulations in most of the countries hosting rallies, team Craftsman was unable to get there machines liscensed for road use. Except for in Africa, where basically anything that moves is considered road worthy. So this was the only rally that the "Riding Rallyists" as the liked to refer to themselves, were allowed to compete. Since the team had not competed in a single round for over 4 months, they did have plenty of time for testing, however also never having run in Africa, they had no idea what they were up against. Sadly, on the fourth stage of the opening day, both machines were stopped at gunpoint by some not so happy locals, and taken from their drivers. Never to be seen again. Miraculously just 3 years ago, one of the 2 long lost Lawn Tractors resurfaced at the Barret-Jackson Auto auction were it was sold for more than $23.00!!! The Lawn Tractor was in immaculate condition, and when asked how he had kept it looking so good for such a long period of time, the owner (who declined interview) commented,"Hey, it's a Craftsman." Am I right? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mike |

Close, but no cigar. However, the company in question also made tractors.

Well, you've got to do better than that--please give details. Are you saying that Sears Roebuck sponsored the Porsche factory rally team in 1971? Was it a tire sponsorship only?

And I quote "It (Porsche) did a deal with Sears and Roebuck and ran works cars on standard Sears tires in several events, one of which was the Safari rally"
Gentlemen, draw your own conclusions from that. Futher info: The car was a 2.4, it came in 5th in the '71 Safari Rally, driver/nav were Zasada/Bien. They were notorious homosexuals and were known to do underwear raids on other teams during servicing. So you understand the underwear color issue got a little confusing at times. |
