Post Safety Gear for Beginner Auto-X/Driving School

I did a quick search to see what I'd need to get started taking some driving classes and maybe get into auto-x. Aside from the car mods, I haven't found much specific info on helmets, which appear to be a necessity. I know OMP and Sparco make open-face helmets, but what is all this about Snell, ANSI, etc?

Could anyone provide some clear and simple guidance as to what I need to get and where? I know Primm is one good resource.

i had tech-inspectors meeting last weekend...

for scca auto-x it MUST be Snell 90 or better look inside for sticker, usualy orange or red with snell 90 /snell 95 super imposed in the background

scca rules dictate that a helmet can not be more than 10 years out of date.. this year snell 85 expired we were told to be forcefull and NOT allow these

for auto-x you can have an open faced helmet so it can be "m" or "sm"

in my reigion if you bring a helmet that dose not meet these requirements.. it is IMPOUNDED (locked to timing trailer) until after the event .. just to keep people safe.. we then provice loaner helmets

You should go ahead an get a Snell SA2000 rated helmet.

Many auto-x will let you get away with an "M" rated helmet, but for driving schools, you'll need the SA rating anyway. "SA95" rating will be good for another 5 years, after that they won't be allowed in SCCA (Snell releases new standards every 5 years)

How does SA differ from M? SA gives you multiple impact protection and a fire-resistant liner.

I'm very happy with my Bell SR-Pro (SA95)
Look at Bell, Bieffe, and Simpson for good open face SA helmets. OMP and others, IMHO, are too expensive for the occasional racer. I don't have a $10 head, but it's not $1000 either

HTH

Thanks guys. I'll check it out. Primm has OMP and Sparco helmets for under $300. I'll inquire about the ratings.

I think I'll stop by the local Harley Dealership on my way home tonight to price out helmets. I appreciate the info folks.

Yeah, ditto on what Jaxx said, local motorcycle shop for Snell 95, SCCA-approved helmet: $105!

Open-faced, white (because it doesn't cook your brain so much in the summer) and with 2 visors!
