Post Sixteen days til F1 season...predictions?

I'm thinking Schumi, now that he's gotten the bugbear off his back. But the traction control thing will be interesting, when it is approved shortly after the start of the season.

It bums me out that none of the other teams are really competitive with Ferrari and McLaren, although word is that Montoya is really fast, and so is Alesi, of all people!

Oh, this is an awesome forum.

More importantly, where am I supposed to watch F1 this year? Does anybody know if Speedvision is getting the rights or not?

Alesi setting such fast times in the new Prost-Ferrari is pretty interesting.

But come tech inspection in Australia, things are likely to be more normal, Ferrari vs. McLaren. I'll go out on a limb, and say DC.

McLaren has looked wicked fast in pre-season this year, and Mika wasn't full heart and soul going for the championship in the first half of last season, so I'm guessing he won't be again this year. I hope I'm wrong, 'cause he can win the WC again if commits 100%.

DC vs. Schumi, w/Schumi having a car not as fast. Should be some bumping and banging again 'tween those two. And they won't be friendly to each other in the press.

If the Ferrari is fast it will come down to reliability.

i'll have to agree with OnTheGas. if it's gonna be ferrari, it'll be up to reliability too. i would like to think that every year, it comes down to luck.

yeah, and who is gonna carry F1? i hope it'll be fox sports again, because i don't have speedvision.

I'm a Tifoso, so I have to go with the Prancing Horse to reign again. Also a Shuey fan since his Bentton days and his first championship in '94. I think Ferrari can go back-to-back on this one, as well they should! Where's my red wig??!!??

This year...I'm betting on Footwork...oh wait...no Lotus...well maybe not...how about Tyrell...damn Uncle Ken is gone...

I think Williams will do well with the addition of Montoya unless he does a Zanardi...

I too think Schumi Sr. will do well but I always pull for the underdogs like Jordan (Eddie's always got great looking umbrella girls...damn him...) Sauber, and of course...Minardi...

For some reason, I just can't back McLaren/Mercedes...is it because Couthard's jaw is as wide as the race transporter that pulls his car???

My heart belongs to BMW-Williams. I think they will be very competetive this year but I am betting on the Flying Finn. Mika will rule once more.

Well I do respect Schumi, however, I think the days of the McLaran/Ferrari domination are coming to an end. Not to say that one of them wont win the championship, but I do not think that the disparity between M & F and the rest of the teams will be so large.

I saw on speedvision, that out of the 1617 or so laps in the 2000 season, M & F lead all but 9!

That is as one sided as it gets. Things to remember. Honda is involved with two teams this year, BAR and Jordan (GO Heinz Herald Frentzen!!!!, GO Trulli!!!!). And honda has NEVER entered into any form of motorsports without being VERY, I say it again VERY successful! I look for Jordan to be best of the rest this year. Montoya is a wild card. You can count on Ralph to perform quite well, he always does. I just dont know what to think of Juan Pablo. He has the car, and he definitely has the talent. Time will tell.

Other possible wild cards nobody else has mentioned... Benetton, has a new Renault engine that might be very strong. Jenson Button supprised everybody last year. That kid is talented!

So my predicitions.... (and these are way out but hey I can hope) is a championship for Frentzen! I know laugh all you want, but when I go to INDY again this year I promise you I will be waving my Jordan flag!!!

Whoo hooo

It will be Schuey all the way again, there's no stopping him. Think about it, he has been in the 2nd best car for the last 4 years and has taken the championship to the last race each year. I magine Mika or DC in that situation, they wouldn't have done much. I think Mika is a great driver, but he also has a great car, the best. DC is over rated and a cry baby, just like Ron Dennis. Now that Schumacher has gotten that first win for Ferrari behind him there will be no stopping him. He will be confident and relaxed. It will once again be a battle between McLaren and Ferrari. Look for good performances from Villeneuve, maybe Montoya, Jenson should start to drive in a more mature manner and do quite well. Anyway, cant wait

ARROWS!!?? Methinks Kyle done hitteth the cracketh pipe.

Seriously, though, I think, and sincerely hope that there will be noise from other teams this season. Williams is on the cusp, and the two Honda teams, given the pace of development that Honda is capable, could be threatening.

The other wild card is that, according to the AutoWeek report, driver aids like traction control and fully automatic gearboxes are expected to rear their heads again.

If the big teams have been cheating all along, and now the little teams can have that stuff too, won't THAT make things a hoot?

My dark horses are Villeneuve, Frentzen, and Montoya, though I'd like to see Alesi do something.

It would cause me physical pain if DC won the title. Covering the USGP last year, I got to see how comprehensive a prick he really is. He has his nice face on for the TV press conference via world feed. At the print meetings, where there are no cameras...it's staggering how rude and petulant he is.

Speedvision is again the network of record. There was a nasty rumor that ESPN2 was looking to get the rights, but we all know what would have happened had that occurred.

Come on Kevin...you know it's Arrows in "Naught One"...

Since you've got Speedvision Kevin, I'm gonna come over all the time and watch both the F1 races and the WRC shows...

Fox Sports Net used to televise the F1 races but since I don't have cable anymore I don't know if they do now.

I hope and wish schumacher, will do it again, but for some reason I think Villeneuve will be quite impressive with the added technology "traction control".
-Oh and for those of you that have never seen an F-1 race, go to INDY this year, you will never see or hear anything like it!
2000 Indy F-1 was spectacular!
Turn 1 at indy, across from the FERRARI pits, and with all the FERRARI fans during qualifing was the most emotional thing I have ever been apart of.

yeah i'm not alone!

the proble with BAR is that their chassis is a POS we all know what the Honda engines are capable of, but if you watch how Jacques drove last year (with some of those in-car camera) you can see that he's allover the place working his way to make the car stable... but i really hope they do better this yr tho

and yes, Alesi finally might get a car that's fast!

as far as Button goes, the last rumor had it that there might be some design problems with the new Benetton engine and chassis, but i truly hope they get that solved and see Montoya and Button having a good fight

Forgive me guys for a somewhat related question, but what has been the initial opinions on Montoya? I know GTGuy mentioned he was fast, any additional info about his progress thus far?

One more not-so related question. What do you guys think were the reasons why Zanardi had a very unsuccessful try at F1? Was it him, the team, a combo of the two?

Sorry, I'm a big F1 fan, but knowing the winner of the previous race is all the knowledgeable I am about it ( doesn't help that my Autosport subscription ran out right before the WRC season started either )

Thanks fellas.

Obviously, not much in the way of real performance information is to be gleaned from testing, as regards what a team will actually do. But reports are that when Montoya hasn't been squabbling with Ralf, he's been setting hotter times, going faster than the car really has a right to. Plus, the BMW learning curve is still spiraling upward. We know Montoya has talent and is fearless. But F1 makes a good ride critical.

Ah, Zanardi. There's a host of speculation about that one. Some say that driving CART made him lazy, and unable to cope with the twitchier F1 chassis. Others, that he could never get comfortable with the F1 car. He even tried cast iron brake rotors on his ride! Crikey!

I think that it was a combination of great expectations, a car that wasn't really up to snuff, and yes, a driver whose competitive skills weren't up to snuff. Had he been given more time, I think that his talent would have taken over. But such as it was...

Let's not also forget that we don't really know how fast Zanardi was, since he never had a competitive F1 drive. When he bopped over to CART he got the Ganassi ride, which at that time was like the McLaren of CART. Hey, if Vasser could win a title driving a Ganassi ride, somebody with real talent would have had as easy a time as Zanardi.

But rarely does CART feed stars to F1. Usually, it's the other way around. Look at people like Mark Blundell, or Nigel Mansell who was done in F1, but went over to CART to nab some championships. Villeneuve is different, in the sense that he's a clear talent, who showed what he could do in a real car, the Williams. So it could be argued that Zanardi was doomed by history.

Just look @ Jaques pedigree though...Gilles wasn't too bad of a driver...

I agree with Kevin, CART makes you lazy when it comes to cars because they've got all the aerodynamic aids and the fact that they've got turbo motors helps too.

F1 is more of a drivers series IMO in comparison to CART...then you have IRL...damn Tony George...yeah he brought the GP back to the States BUT he didn't do it on a proper road course...I wanted an excuse to go to Laguna Seca...or someplace cool like that...

I'd love to see a race where all the back marker team drivers...Marc Gene, Gaston Mazzecane, et al get to drive the top teams cars and vice versa to see if it's the car or the driver...I'd say the latter but it'd be fun to watch...

We all know its going to be between schuey, mika, and dave. BAR isn't going to do JACK! C'mon People! The Only teams that may challenge the big two in a race will be Williams or Jaguar(they've done a lot of developing). Toyota will be the team to watch in years to come though. Are they going to be in F1 next season?
