Installed an oil temperature gauge this week. Wow, the information I've been missing. I always try to start the car out nicely to give it some time & distance to get everything going. Now that I've got the oil temp gauge installed, it especially helps me realize that it takes a bit more time than might be expected, for things to warm up to more normal operating temperature range.
This is all in the context of the gauges I've already got in my WRX (boost, EGT, air/fuel ratio, water temp, fuel pressure, and oil pressure). I must say, now that I see the benefit of knowing oil temp, that if I had to choose between oil pressure gauge versus oil temperature gauge, I would definitely go with the oil temp. At least, that is how I feel for street driving. Now, on the track, maybe the priorities are a bit different. At any rate, knowledge is power, and hopefully I continue to learn more effective ways to use it properly. At any rate, woo hoo, now I've got all seven GReddy gauges installed, it's great! Hmmmm perhaps I had a freek greddy oil pressure gauge for awhile, but at normal temp the car would idle at 2.0 bar of pressure. It would not idle at that pressure until up to temp, it would start idle at like 5.0 ish and as the temp came up slowly come down to the right pressure. I.E. once you are idleing at 2.0 bar oil is up to temp. Kind of made a temp gauge some what redundant, at least for the state of tune the car was in at the time.

Romanikque,
My GReddy oil pressure gauge paints a similar picture in terms of higher pressure readings when first starting up the car and then settling down to "normal" pressure readings after a bit. Maybe it's just me but the oil temp gauge "clicks" with my brain so much better ... for some reason, it's more compelling to me to see the gauge telling me, "hey you're not yet at normal operating temperature" so that I take it easy for perhaps a bit longer in the morning ... but maybe that's just me!
