Post SCCA Trans-Am Question

Is someone running a Viper-style car this season? I was watching the Sebring event, and heard "viper" mentioned, but didn't see what they were talking about.

And what about the motor - I know the engines are basically winston cup-type v8s, so would they put a Chrysler v8 in, or is it displacement based (stock viper motor)

I just finished watching the race and saw a funny looking blue car with white racing stripes...low and behold a viper body. I think all the cars are restricted to V8's, but don't know what they do as far as manufactures go.

I beleive the car is running a V10...it sounded TOTALLY differnt from the other cars. Im sure its being restricted in some way though. Either that or they are limited on the amount of mods they can do.
remember the V8's they run are highly tuned. Im sure if you look hard enough you can find the answer to that question.

The Viper is running under the new homologation rules of the Trans-Am class. Basically the car has to follow the outlines of the stock car down the center line, and the side. The wheel arches, and bottom 10 inches of the car are completely free. They are also running a spec wing that all cars must use. The SCCA wind tunnel tests all teh cars to make sure that the downforce and drag for each car is withen a certain paramater so that the feild is even. THis was done so that more car makes would show up on the course, and keep the cars looking as close to their street counterparts as possible. Look for Toyota, with the Solara, and Nissan, with the Primera, to show up later this season, both running FF configuration cars, with 2.0L turbocharged engines. I feel sorry for the other teams i Toyota decides to run the 3S-GTE. Basically look for those cars to have a very similar appearance to those of the BTCC supertourers. It should be interesting to see how the rest of the year plays out.

I actually found the rules/standards for the series. All motors are "standard" V8 overhead valve configurations.

2.0L turbos huh? It'll be really interesting to see those cars run. Can't imagine the weight penalty or power cap they'll impose on those cars

Well, 2.0L T's is what ive heard. I may be wrong.

I think it would be a complete shame if they made them switch to an FR layout and run a V8...thats just not right.

If they just came up with a basic hp/weight formula, they could have a really cool series - we could see a Trans-Am Legacy, or Maxima, or whatever Take the established trans-am formula, and bring the diversity of a touring car or GT series.

If you remember back int eh mid 80's, at the hight of racing development, IMHO, Dan Gurney (sp?) took a Celica ST-165, and ran it with a 3S-GTE single turbo, and CLEANED THE CLOCKS of all the big-3 teams out there.

Who knows, maybe we could see the same again.

When Audi cleaned everyone's clock in '88 with what was a 5000cs quattro, they changed the rules... V8 rear drive, banning turbos and AWD. Made it impossible for any manufacturer except Ford and GM.

The end of last season, they were trying to get interest from Germany and Japan. The V8 formula got boring.

I was just watching the Audi Sport "infomercial" on Speedvision - Hurley Haywood was the Angel of Death to those guys.

If you get a chance to see 'Secrets of Speed: Unfair Advantage'... grab it with both ands and don't let go!

It was an ESPN/Audi propaganda show (about 1991) with incredible ralling, TransAm and IMSA racing.

Real goosepimple stuff.

Thumbs up

You guys are right, it would be really cool to see something like that.
I think that the controling factor should be H.P. versus weight.
Everycar should not exceed a certain H.P. as measured at the wheels at the end of the race, and should not go under a certain weight at the end of the race.

There is a motorcycle race series like that, and it really makes for some unique configurations of motor and machine.
The cool thing is that when the green flag drops, they are all evenly matched.

This was the AWD bug that bit me in the butt. Does anybody have a copy of this on VHS/DVD? (can you burn DVD's yet???)

Default ESPN Secrets of Speed > Audi, Unfair Advantage...

I also could not forget this program, even after all these years; after doing some research, I was able to find out a bit more about the show. The ESPN series was called "The Secrets of Speed", and the Audi episode was called Unfair Advantage. It was produced by 303 Studios Inc in New York. I found a low res version on the web, but as I'm just a newbie, I can't post a URL until I've made 10 posts...it's somewhere in the audiworld forums...email me if you can't find it. jas
