I think I'm the only person in my family who likes to keep his car clean.
This is a 2007 Civic that my family bought after my brother started learning to drive and after our Legacy was wrecked. My mother talked us into this one, we were set to go with a Fit or a Forester. Well, about three months later, my mom herniated a disk, and the cardboard seats in this thing are murder on her back. My dad hated the squirrelly handling and laggy throttle. So we entrusted it to my brother, knowing that if it wrecked we'd get the best insurance payout and would be the least sad about losing it. Well, this car now gets driven between here and Kansas City, MO about four times a year. It also gets taken all over the country since my brother is a traveller. He never washes it, and as far as I know, it's never been washed except for a few "rinses" at the dealer. This is my effort at making it look as good as possible with only my bare hands - no machine buffers. This is also going to be a multi-part series as I do not have the staying power nor the free time to do all this in one day. I know you all know that I'm one for hyperbole... but I am DEAD SERIOUS about my thread title. Here's some before shots. ![]() I guess Honda paint isn't as thick as they say... ![]() ![]() ![]() This is how most of the car looked: ![]() A rinse and a wash with dish soap revealed even more goodies. ![]() This was previously a bunch of black tar flakes that he got on the car on his way to the mountains of North Carolina and didn't bother to tell me about. It was all over the windshield, too. ![]() ![]()

This is what the clay bar looked like after half the hood.
![]() And the top of the trunk. ![]() Seeing the car under some halogens at night was what made me decide to detail this thing. After a wash with Griot's Garage car wash, I dried the car and went back outside after I finished cooking dinner. You may now all finally see what I have based my title on. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the worst paint I've ever seen. Tomorrow I'll start work with my super-secret patented sandwich that only AutoAesthetica and myself know about (hint: I'll tell you tomorrow) and tackle the engine bay and the wheels. |

Yea it's pretty bad. But really not much worse than others I've seen. Honestly, I'm more intrigued by this sandwich.

Actually, I have seen much worse on older cars, but on a car this age I was really surprised. My car is in better shape and it's almost 15. |

I'm just happy to see Frankenwagon is alive and well. I was beginning to think it was just a myth.

Honda paint is notoriously thin, and just a complete trash pile really. I had a similiar experience. Even when detailed it doesn't take much to destroy all your hard work.

8th gen civics do have horrendous paint. My wife's 2008 EXL needs to be touched up twice a year because the paint is too soft and stones just tear it up. It is washed weekly and waxed every three months with zymol, it doesn't matter. The beige leather is stained from a pair of her jeans too. Good luck with the detail bro! At least the engine and trannies in the civics are tough as nails.

Holy hell batman!! Good luck to you sir.
Correction by hand on that thing is going to be a nightmare. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can get corrected. Also what is your impression with Griot's products? I have been thinking about testing some of them. You can PM if you like, i don't want to veer to far from your topic. Last edited by AspenScoob255; 07-12-2011 at 03:24 PM. |

Jesus Christ.
Cleaner wax. ****ing Meguiar's Cleaner Wax, which I've used for years without issue after claying and compounding, on a fresh foam pad, left hologramming on the paint. That's un****ingbelievable. I have never in my four years detailing cars had that happen. So now I have to figure out how to fix that. |
