Default JC's SF5 swap thread

I've had my Forester for almost 1 year now, and things have come a long way since. Originally, I was inspired by Angry Toaster:

After finishing school, I worked two months for VANOC during the Olympics and Paras, saved my monies and bought the cheapest Foz I could find on CL.
300,000KM 5spd with a funny idle. Turns out the exhaust valve on Cyl 4 doesnt close properly, thus creating a horrible imbalance.

Don't have any pictures of it from back then... Looks like any other stock Forester, cept the hood was bent in from a front end accident. Front brakes were seized when I took possession, so FHI 4 pots that I had bought a year ago went in. *Thanks to Zefy for rebuilding them*

Still had some dough burning a hole in my pocket, and these came up for sale: 17in UK17 WRX wheels. Yay! I sat on them for almost a year until I could find some suitable rubber.

Now that I had the brakes fixed and it was actually drivable, I turned my attention to the horribly soft 300k suspension. In went some Koni Inserts and RCE WRX wagon lowering springs. Turned out to be exactly the ride height i was looking for. Handles so much better after.

As things were at this point:

A while later, I came across some Recaros on the board for sale. Scooped those up and added them into the mix. Had to get custom rails made by Wedge Engineering in California.

Now, I realize that I have no hope of passing aircare the next time around, and I find the first piece of the solution to my emissions problem. A JDM SF5 Turbo hood, with the all important hood scoop. Bolted in perfectly, right in the parking lot before the Timmy meet.

Soon afterwards, the biggest piece in the grand scheme of things showed itself. Half of a JDM 2002 WRX STi Limited. Standard with EJ207, VF30 and the much coveted 6spd gearbox.

We spent the first day removing the remnants of the windshield, vacuuming the glass shards and whatnot.

Removed:
remnants of the windshield
bumper beam
HID ballasts
Coilovers
carpet
kick panels and center console
steering wheel airbag
ECU
STI cluster
intercooler
intake snorkus

Day Two:

Removed:
Accessory belts
Radiator

Disconnected:
Fuel Lines
Heater core
Power steering
all wiring to engine
transmission harness

So, I have the front half of a GD Chassis. What do? I'll have stripped everything off it, it'll just be the metal frame. Anybody have any brilliant ideas what I should do with this apart from just scrap it?

moar pics of 207 being put into forester!! if you're looming for a way to dispose of the bare metal half-cut, you may be able to call a junk car disposal. they usually pick up large amounts of scrap steel for free.

Pallet of removed items

Day 3
Now the engine and gearbox are sitting on 3 jacks, completely disconnected from the body.

Removed:
Stupid GD U frame
engine crossmember bolts
tranny crossmember bolts

Day 4
Tonight, we lifted the chassis off the motor combo. Now to start trying to figure out wtf to do with that chassis...

That's an awesome way to get your car through aircare!

Good luck with your swap, hope it all goes smoothly.

Just out of curiousity, did you get the steering rack with your 1/2 STI?
I changed the rack on my '04 XT and it was a huge improvement...Not sure if your donor car would swap in or not, but it might be worth looking into... ( On SG Forester, only the '04 STI rack is a direct swap, not sure about the SF. )

The JDM STi rack is no good but jchretien did pick up a '05 STi rack. It should fit into a bugeye GD turbo subframe with a little bit of modding.

http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=16532

Then the slow and sloppy stock SF steering rack can go away

Haha, yeah, that'd be great, but I mean when does your AirCare expire? I can't remember, but I know it's sometime over the next couple months, right?

Oh, lol, crap...

Well, at least you've got some time left on your insurance to get this all done.

And I think you should make a TV stand out of the half-cut... clean it up, stand it up on the firewall, and mount a TV in the engine bay. Instant class.

The wire harness merge by iWire will take at least a week, including shipping back and forth >.<

And we also need to tear down the fozzie.

You have 3 people at least doing it.

1. Find someone else who knows how to read the wiring diagram to do the merge.
2. Tear down the fozzie tonight and get the wiring out, put the engine and what not in and wait for the wiring.

I am making it sound too simple.

Why not just do a complete wiring swap? Will probably take less time

You are making it sound too simple... I wish it were that simple, just literally plug and play.

The half cut didn't come with the rear half of the harness . Isn't there some slight differences between a sedan and wagon harness?
