Bought this pre-production WRX in 07. It is the 18th USDM WRX ever produced (see vin and build date). I purchased it directly from an SOA member. It was the 3rd WRX to hit US shores, it was used in the US debut of the WRX, it was used in the filming of the WRX Commercial (driven by Rod Millen), and passed around to Subaru exec's to enjoy. It sat for 5 years after that in a garage, and I purchased it in '07 with 1,200 miles on the clock. The car had to be completely rebuilt, and holds a salvage title.

The reason Im parting it is due to its pre production nature. The car was completely and professionally restored from its wreck, which did a good number on the left rear corner of the car. I have all the receipts for the extensive repair, and it was driven for nearly 20,000 miles after the repairs with mechanical success. The issue is the the electronics. The car came with a locked Subaru JDM ECU, with a custom tune which was un-alterable. I replaced the ECU twice, ran a piggyback, etc to no avail. The car will not hold a tune, it has random electrical quirks that nobody can figure out. It has been to most of the major Subaru experts on the East Coast, its simply an electronic mess. The only resolution would be to completely pull and replace the wiring harness, or you could try a standalone (I wasn't willing to invest). I've been battling with this car for nearly 5 years, and I'm tired of spending more time with a wrench in my right hand than a shift knob. So its time, the car is being parted.

I'm keeping a handful of things for a new car. The rest is being parted. The chassis is for sale. Anyone who wants to build a track car, rally car, or cares enough to see it restored to its original nature, is welcome to take on the project. I am only asking what I was quoted in scrap value when I rebuilt the car for the chassis, and whatever doesn't sell off of it.

All of these parts are in mint condition. The car was garage kept for its entire life, meticulously cared for. If there is any above average wear, I will declare it specifically before selling. Pictures will all be available upon request, usually within 24 hours.

6mt Drivetrain Swap

The 6 Speed in the car is a V7 trans rebuilt 3,000 miles ago by Jodie at Rallispec. It is going back to Jodie as I will be keeping the long ratio gears I had installed. The trans will be reassembled with fresh seals and standard ratio gears. When I had it built, I had a brand new Legacy Spec B center LSD installed, no DCCD worries here. This is going to be one of the last things on my list, so the trans will not be ready for pickup for at least a few weeks, likely not until mid August. It will come with an Exedy Stage 2 pressure plate, ACT upgraded disc with < 3000 miles of use, no track days, and an OEM flywheel. Shift linkage can also be included. $3000

The rest of the drivetrain kit, I will sell separately before the trans if there is interest. If not, it will go with the trans as a drop-in kit for a WRX. It includes:

Automatic Driveshaft, purchased new when the trans was installed 3k ago.
Custom built axles by Jodie @ Rallispec to drop into any 02' WRX (very hard to find, are not being made currently)
Built R160 with a full Kazz LSD, 3.90. LSD is awesome, surprisingly quiet.

Im sad to be parting it out, but Im even sadder not have driven it in a year. When was the last time you saw it on the road? Thats the only reason its getting parted, time for newer and faster things.

As I posted in my OP, its an electrical mess. The car wont run on anything but the OEM ECU and original custom tune, which is locked an unalterable. It was having some very strange unexplainable electrical problems and after taking it to everyone I could, the only way I could see it running again was to replace the entire harness head to toe, and after years of battling with this car, I couldnt bring myself to spend the money to do it, and I certainly dont want to tackle it myself.

I know all this sounds strange, but a tuner would put a great map on it, it would run perfectly for a few days, then it would spit the tune out laughing, and stop running. The logs were a mess. Tried everything, no dice. The last straw was when the fuel pump only wanted to work when it was unplugged. Yeah, you read that right. The car would idle with the pump unplugged, but the second you attached the clip to the pump harness, it would shut the car off instantly. After 3 fuel pumps (OEM, Jegs, Walboro) all on their own harnesses that I knew to work from other cars, I threw my hands in the air and my cards on the table, face down.

How can I part a pre production you ask? After 4 years, $12,000+, 3 tuners, 2 master techs, and almost no successful driving, Im giving up. I cant believe anyone in their sane mind would be willing to throw a few thousand more into this car after what I've gone though to try to get it on the road. Ive given it my all, and gotten kicked in the balls in return.

I want to drive something more than I want to be the cool kid with the preproduction car. I can part this, build the Subaru Ive always wanted and walk away even right now with a car that is not a salvage, so Im cutting my losses.

I would LOVE to see this chassis go to someone looking for a project, whether a rebuild with a new harness or a racecar, I'd like to see it back on the road rather than go to the scrapyard, Im just not the person with the patience time or money to do so, and Im getting really bored with my 180hp 4,000lb daily.

pics/price for the gauge pod and all the wiring, its not hard to un-do everything, just a jumper to the radio harness and 2 lines to the engine, one to the drainplug for oil temp, and a vacuum line for the boost. let me know if you can pull it all and what your looking to get, thanks- joe
