Talking I want a subaru Impreza, but i dont know what its called or what to look for...help!

hey guys,
newbie here. As you can tell by my sig, i'm not exactly an import lover although my family and I have owned 2 already (one that we flipped). I hate the WRX and think it overrated. its quick because of AWD, not the 160hp its putting to th ground . thats just me though

My rents gave me a 93 impreza front wheel drive and all 110horses that came with it. its got a 135k miles and burning some oil. although i can, i don't feel like changing rings. valve seals ect...

I just want a Nice winter car for the winter, with AWD for when I go snowboarding. I hate SUV's. I already have one gas guzzler, don't need another.

I want an impreza with the 2.5 L for the winter so i can power through the snow.
Its not the one with the big doofy headlights, but it looks a bit better than my 93. I'm not going to mod it, well maybe a CD player and some snow tires, but thats bout it... MAYBE some suspension down the line... (this is all too familiar... i got a stock camaro and said that... soon its going to be an 11sec car pulling +.90 g's)

I have some general questions
what should I pay for this car with about 40-60k miles in good condition?
what should i look for? any problem areas?

any options that are good to have, especailly in snow

hows the 5Spd? good ? bad?

how are they in snow?

does the AWD have traction/stability controll?

easy to work on?

I wouldn't mind getting a bit of a fixer upper... I never worked on a DOHC car, but everything but the front 2 seats in my camaro have been out at one point... so i know what i'm doing. Any ideas on where to get one?

Are they worth more in the winter or summer (camaro is worth crap in the winter)

Where can I find some subarus for sale?
I'd like one with nothing but AWD and a CD player...

thanks guys

IBthemove!

and about your sig........it won't show up because they're disabled.....same goes for avatars. I-club is pretty anal about sig's/avatar's/titles/posts.....avatar's i can understand because they take up alot of bandwith.

so don't piss any of the mods off...they all have itchy BAN fingers.

first of all the wrx has 227 hp not 160
besides that my faimly had a 99 outback, which we just traded in to get a wrx, with which is great in the snow. we live in buffalo so we know a little about driving in the snow. we had a 5sp that worked well. If i were you i would get a more recent model because the power is better at lower rpms which makes it much better in the snow. for a used one it wont be alot, it all depend on what you need though. the impreza is a little smaller than the outback but it is also cheaper. also if it makes a diffrence you can't get a sunroof with the mt ( it matters to some people) i am not sure of what a used one is going for but it is not a huge sum. hope this was helpfull

so the WRX has a 100% efficent drivetrain and no power is lost through subaru's AWD system huh?

and what is the mt?

thanks

bziller - if you want to get picky he did saw 160 HP to the ground (i.e. wheel HP).

So if the WRX is quick because of AWD, why isn't a 1.8L AWD Impreza quick then? HP doesn't seem to make much of a difference, according to you...

I can answer a few of your questions though:

- the 5spd is...touchy. I get some weird problems every now and then (4th grinds on downshifts, shifting into 1st very hard), but overall its fine. Not great though.

- my friend in PA has an '01 2.5RS, and he says it handles slush and snow with ease.

- Imprezas seem pretty mod friendly, but compared to Hondas, all our parts costs twice as much. Maintenance wise it's not any harder than any other car.

you should expect to pay around 15k in that general area. there have been some pretty good deals lately in the Private For Sale section of i-club but i think you mighta missed out. i got a MY01 rs and i dont think the manual tranny is that bad.. in fact its not bad at all. other awd cars you might consider are

Audi S4 - nice but dont think you can afford that
Mitsu GSX - awd with turbo, doesnt look like a snow capable car but hey, its awd.
Eagle Talon Tsi- basically a GSX but earliar model under different name
Pontiac Vibe - you saw the commerical..
old school Toyota something - supposedly has big capabilities of handling large amounts of HP but youre not into that so i dunno.

The 2.5RS is a good choice but even a 2.2L has plenty enough power to take on large amounts of snow. When we were living in Upstate NY the 2.2L w/ studded snow tires would claw up driveways that were ice-covered and pull away from slush-filled intersections w/ the greatest of ease.

The price difference between 2.2 and 2.5 can sometimes be pretty big. Believe it or not eBay is a good place to find Subarus at a good price. A friend of mine just bought a 1999 2.2L Impreza Wagon for 7400.00.

As far as working on them, Subaru motors are quite easy to work on (I've worked on quite a few different vehicles). The amount of space around the motor and low placement in the engine bay makes it easy. This has to be the easiest car to change the oil on ever. You can catch the drain and filter oil easily in the same pan b/c they are so close together.

The 5-spd is great...I've never had any real issues w/ it. The clutch will shudder when cold but it goes away pretty quick and is normal.

The AWD system is a kind of passive traction-control "shifting power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip" (Subaru ad slogan ).

And lastly 'mt'= Manual Transmission

Hope that covers it all.

If you want a 2.5 in your Impreza... you want a 2.5RS. If you want one without the big goofy headlights... you want a 98-01 2.5RS. They all have sunroofs, so no worries about that (as a side note, none of the current model MY02 Impreza's are avalidable w/ a sunroof). I have a mt in my 2002, no major problems to report. It is sometimes a pain to get it into first unless stopped without a slight clunk or grind, but it's easy enough to work around... and the clutch shudders when cold, which is pretty much normal. The car works great in the snow... even with the stock RE92 tires. I'm sure people will tell me otherwise, but I drove the car for a whole Northern Michigan winter on these tires with no problems... and the tires have good meat so I'll do it again this winter. I can only imagine how well it would do w/ dedicated snow tires. As with any type of snow driving... you are your stability control. Drive well within your limits or you will meet Mr. Curb... or worse. Do a quick poll of WRX owners who came into the car thinking AWD was a godsend in the snow... and how many of them wacked a curb. I can think of 2 I know personally... I'm sure there are a whole bunch more. Most will probibly blame it on the tires, not their driving... it's funny how I made it through the winter fine on the same tires. Drive within you and your cars limits and you'll be fine.

DOHC 2.5's are only on 98's ans early 99's. All the rest (including 2002's) are SOHC. You might have been thinking of 16 valve valve engines being DOHC, but they are infact SOHC. If you take the valve cover off they are indeed SOHC. THough there are 2 camshafts because the engine has 2 banks of cylinders.

Inthe snow the cars are great. You do need to remember that AWD does not increase the traction of the tires, so turning and breaking are unaffected (though the AWD aids the antilock breaks by keeping individual tires and complete axles from locking) you biggest advantage is under acceleration. You get little slip (unless you choose to) you just drive from a stand still. With dedicated winter tires its more like driving on gravel than snow and ice.

NO! NO! If you don't care about how 2.5 RS looks, you don't deserve RS. Just kidding.
Buy used legacy wagon. They are cheaper and good for winter.
