Default My WRX can sing?

Hey guys,

So just yesterday I noticed a whooshing sound coming from my engine bay when I put in some boost. Chano describes it almost like a cat hissing. It doesn't make the sound unless I'm under load. Best part is, when I go into WOT, the hiss turns into a very low pitch whistle around 4000-42000rpm and on.

I figured it was some kind of leak so i took some logs. Weird thing is the car seems to run perfectly fine. Oil was good, logs show that i'm hitting target boost, AFR doesn't dip below 11.1:1, and no knock detected at all.

The sound seems to be coming from the driver side more near the center. So I figure id check the BPV gasket, looked perfectly fine. I'm completely out of ideas on what it could be.

I'm setting up an appointment with conti to check it out sometime next week but hoped someone might know a quick solution so I don't have to leave the car there all day.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Check all the hoses and clamps to the intercooler. My 02 was doing the same thing after I pulled the intercooler one time, I thought it was the bpv leaking as well but it turned out I forgot to tighten the hose connecting the intercooler to the intake manifold.it was building pressure and leaking causing a whistling sound under engine load.

Ah ok I'll go take a look. I just find it annoying that I haven't touched anything around there yet its pretty obvious that something in that area went loose.

Is it a pain in the ass to get to that hose?

If this is a 2011 WRX you don't have the hoses described by crash unless you have changed your stock setup. Boost leak check the car with a boost leak tool maybe. Easy to build one or stop by a local shop that has one.

Yea its a 2011 completely stock setup for the hoses. I do have an invidia divorced DP and Q300, but nothing outside of that was touched. Just looking around and poking at hoses, everything seem to be pretttty darn tight. As far as boost leak is concerned, i'm not entirely sure what the symptoms of that are but wouldn't the car lose boost? I'm boosting 16.5-16.8 PSI and holding there pretty well, which is where i've always been.

If it was a boost leak, where might the problem exist?

I've also set up an appointment with Continental to look at it next Tuesday.

Thanks for all your guys' help btw, love this community.

It could be something as simple as an oring, a small hole in the intercooler, loose hose clamp on the intake.

A very small boost leak can make noise but not cause a boost drop due to the fact the turbo can still work harder to compensate for the leak. Symptoms however tend to be a richer than normal condition in some cases, increased knock, increased intake air temps. Again a slight leak may have only very slight symptoms.

Check the hose clamps around the throttle body area on the drivers side of the intercooler.

Check the intercooler, specifically where the end tanks are clamped on. Those are notorious for coming loose.

They even make a kit to fix it, it's a common problem, I mean look at the intercooler it has a metal core and a plastic endtanks

No...Unless you like the way it feels. lol

Where the IC bolts to the turbo there is an oring. Doubt this has failed or pushed out but worth a look...

Boost leak check tool right now would be your best friend.

If you don't find it and want to take it to my shop in wasilla I will take a quick look at it.

Don't know for sure but I doubt it. Unless the warranty specifically states what voids it I think they have to prove your modification caused the failure.
