Post Interesting twist about ext. warranty

I went to Subaru for a CEL problem. Waiting for the car, I chatted with the service manager and asked him about the extended warranty and if it was worth it. He told me that I shouldn't get it now and wait until I am close to 36k and then get it if I want to.

Reason for this is that the extended warranty starts when I buy it. So if I go and buy a 7yr/80k ext. warranty at 30k, the warranty would be good for another 7 years and now up to 110k and it is still refundable and everything if I sell your car later (prorated of course). He said that when you buy the warranty when the car is new, you waste the first 3yr/36k because the factory already give you that.

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">He's pulling your _______ (insert appendage). Warranties are written as x miles/x months... whichever comes first. They aren't cumulative, and it won't add up to 110k, it will only last until 80k or 10 years. Extended warranties are craaaap anyway, but I wouldn't trust a service manager who's blantantly lying to you (or is HORRIBLY misinformed...).

It's probably still a good idea to wait until the end of the standard warranty period to decide whether or not you want/need the extended warranty. I don't see any advantage to buying the extra warranty up front. You may not even want to keep the car at the end of 36K miles. I think you're right though, North Ursalia about the coverage details.

Yeah he doesn't know what he's saying.
But, you WILL get a better deal on the warranty if you buy it with the car. I used to work a a Nissan/Jeep dealership and the finance managers are MUCH more willing to deal on the ext. warr. if you're buying the car at the same time.

RacerinLSL, I am with you on that one. It is very true indeed. The time you buy your band new car is the cheapest time to buy your ext. warranty. I ask and found out that if I want to buy ext warranty after the 3 years... boy.... it is very expensive. I know buying the ext warranty early is a big waste but it can save you a lot of money in the long run if you wish to buy the warranty up to 100k miles.
Cheers,

When you get the externded warrenty with the car, you might get free scheduled service or at least a major discount on it. This was why I decide to get an extended warrenty. I'm covered for 15,000 30,000 and 36,000 services now.
