Default GRM Ultimate Track Car Challenge 2011. Subarus up to the Challenge? Videos added

The 2011 Grass Roots Motorports Ultimate Track Car Challenge (UTTC) is this Friday at VIR (Full Course). Element Tuning has been invited this year again and will be running the Varsity Shop category. I'll be posting updates from the track on Friday so please check back if you would like to know how practice and the actual competition is going.

So far an overall win for Subaru is iffy but most certainly is looking better than in the past. I looked over the list of participants

https://spreadsheets.google.com/spre...lE&output=html

A new car this year will be the entry from Superlite running there 600 HP 2011 Coupe driven by Grand AM driver, Ryan Ellis.

This is a track kit car similar to the Riley Track Day Car. Itís a kit that runs about $50k without the driveline and this car runs a 6.8L Chevy LS3. The car weights 2550 lbs wet with driver. Technically this car should lap VIR in the mid to high 1:40s but itís still being developed. At Summit Point a few weeks ago it broke the NASA Super Unlimited track record running a 1:15.52. I however have the NASA TTU lap record at 1:14.3 running my TTU limited 510 HP. Iím sure this car is capable of a lot more but I hope the development isnít there yet. LOL!

Making a return to the UTCC this year is the Riley Technologies 650 HP 2011 Mk XXII Track Day Car registered under Ron McMahon. This car is about 2000 lbs, has serious downforce and with pro Marc Goossens ran a 1:44 in the 2009 GRM UTCC at VIR.

Now Iím not sure whoís driving the car this year but this car was at the Viper Cup race I ran at VIR a couple weeks ago and it wasnít running under 1:57 so who knows. A car like this in the right hands is remarkable but with an enthusiast who knows what time it will run.

Reese Cox will be running the MTI Corvette with around 500 HP. This combo is a bit of an unknown at VIR but he has one a USGT event and has run a 1:27 at Road Atlanta so it should be quick.

Now I raced against David Leonard who has a newer Z06 but races against Cox in the US GT championship and they are both in the 1:27s at Road Atlanta and Leonard ran against me in the Whelen TT at VIR running a 1:57 lap. I saw the MTI car running a track day event after I ran the Viper Cup, USGT, and Whelen TT at VIR so I know the car was out at least getting setup but I could find no times for it.

Kyle Tucker will be running a 1970 700HP Camaro.

I think this car will be quick but Iím not expecting the world from it without huge downforce. It should be a sweet car to watch though!

My nemesis in the NASA Mid Atlantic TTU championship Gill Smith will be there is his modified Z06. His best time was in the 1:57s in the cool March weather and unless heís modded up beyond TTU legal trim heíll have a hard time breaking 1:59 in this crazy heat as it will sap the NA carís power.

There will definitely be some quick Subarus there for sure and Turn In Concepts will be back in their WRX with Tony Wiesenhahn behind the wheel I assume. In the 2010 UTCC the best time the car ran was a 2:01.36 but Iím expecting they have picked up the pace.

Justin Mathews in his 2004 STi has run a 2:01.5 in the cool March weather at VIR but Iím not sure how the car will do in the 100+ degree heat. BoostJunkie should be there but wait heís got three more years to go on his build. LOL! Just kidding, Dan 

The Element Tuning STi driven by Phil Grabow of course will make a run for the podium. Just a couple weeks ago in similar heat I was able to pull off a 1:55.9 at VIR so Iím looking to push a little deeper into the 1:54 range this week after making a few enhancements.

I wanted to make a few more mods to lighten the car up for this race but I hurt my back yesterday and I just need to rest. I might able to just nip in 3000 lbs area and go for the ďheavy weight championĒ trophy.

There are a ton of cool cars that will do well but Iím thinking most of them will be 2:00+ at VIR especially given the 100 degree weather we are going to get.

Stay tuned for updates!

Here's what's up for grabs:

Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge Cup
BimmerWorld Fastest BMW

Make sure the cooling system is ready. Both for car and driver. It's going to be so friggin hot. They really need to get this even out of July into September/October.

Good luck!!

Yeah the cooling system is going to be taxed to the max. I was definitely in the "red" a couple weeks ago and I'm hoping I didn't do too much damage. We've definitely made improvements to the cooling system and we'll put them to the test this week and hopefully I'll be able to provide everyone with some products and tips that help.

3 more years? I resent that! Obviously the goal we set to have the car ready for this event isn't even close to being met though.

Good luck to everyone who's competing, I'd come down there and cheer you on if it wasn't so damn hot and far away.

What, no photo love for me?

I should be doing just fine in the 100+ degree temps. E85 has been working its magic so far. I've yet to hit over 240* oil temps even in hot weather during long sessions.

I doubt I'll win any of those classes haha. Unless a bunch of you break down.

Couldn't find a recent pic with the amount of effort I was willing to put in

I vote for the "Car that always breaks at the GRM UTCC" trophy for myself.

So what do you think guys and gals? How are the Subaru's going to do?

I think there is only 1 EVO entered so who cares about them. Cyber EVO ran a 1:55 in the cool October weather a few years back and AMS hasn't really been campaigning a car but neither are showing up.

Some other lap times to go off of:

- Andy Pilgram KPax Volvo in World Challenge ran qualifying lap at 1:56.2
- Rolex GT pole this year was 1:53.72 set by Jan Magnussen in the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro
-Phil Curran in the Can AM Dodge Hemi Challenger won the event last year with a 1:54.42
-Paul Edwards, driving the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Chevrolet Coyote (DP) pole was 1:44.98

With the right driver's and a setup chassis the DP style cars will be untouchable. They also seem so out of place at an event like this. As crazy as the 1000 HP Can AM Dodge Challenger is, it just seems to fit the event. But it is Ultimate Track Car after all and not Ultimate Production Car

Yeah, let's see if I can finally complete my first full race weekend. Got the new AST from Turn In Concepts after my unavoidable offroad adventure at HyperMess. And after chatting with Turn In Concepts, IAG has made me a baller catch can. Hopefully my oil problems with finally be cured!

Wally is doing some boring doctor stuff all month, something about heart surgery.

Reese Cox is fast. The MTI boys will be bringing it for sure. Every time I leave Road Atlanta, I get behind a convoy of like 10 MTI trucks and haulers. Good luck Subies!

I've got a baller catch can also it holds 2 gallons.....Element Tuning Dry Sump. LOL!

Even with 5 quarts of oil still in the pan we were still skimming bearings. I think at VIR its the long right hander (Hog Pen) as it's a long, high g turn and the oil just hangs out in the head. Even a huge drain back can isn't going to solve this particular situation because when you are on the throttle pulling through the turn there is no way to get the oil back to the pan until you lift again due to the crankcase pressure forcing up the drain back line also.

Good luck and I hope it works well enough to keep that engine together at VIR.

I'm hoping to at least best my previous record. It'll be hot, but I'll have an extra ~40 ponies.

And better watch out, there's an Evo 8 listed with 600 hp. And Whit will be running too. I hope everything goes well for him. I can't remember the last time he had a trouble free weekend.

Phil, I wouldn't worry too much about that Superlite coupe. I know it ran much better the second time out but I believe it caught fire both times it went out on track in it's first debut, and Ryan is going to be racing here at NJMP during the GRAND-AM weekend. I've raced with him for years now and he is a great driver, but that car is much faster than anything he's driven on a regular basis before so I'm sure the development will be slow because both driver and car have to be developed. If you put a regular 'pro' from a prototype class in that thing it should be quick. I'm still guessing Riley's car will take the win if they put someone decent in it.

Ok guys as advanwrx mentioned the Superlite Coupe caught fire/broke and is out. There will be a pro in the Riley but I did not recognize the name. Apparently there is a late entry from Ganassi Racing and its a 700 HP Mustang with a NASCAR driver. Also Danny Popp will be piloting two of the MTI Corvettes and one is a Super Unlimited car.

It's going to be a great race!

Why wouldn't they let anything in? "Rule book out the window" has always been the whole theme for this event.

Practice the car rocked and we clocked a 1:56.3 estimated (no official times) passing cars.

Session 1 lined up second to the Riley but the MTI SU car jumped in front of both of us. Dick! He slowed the Riley and me up, Riley passes, and I'm all over his bumper. He slows way to much exiting.g the esses and I have to go of 110 MPH plus. I'm literally cutting grass and catching air. The cars feels bad so I exit. Cut tires, broken bumper and a blown rear coilover.

James Mulherin strips the car and I have a spare custom BC coilover fitted with Swift springs. Pads are wasted so I tossed a set on. Session1:

Riley 1:50.48, MTI 1:54.95, Ganassi 1:55.7 .......Turn In 2:01, Mathews 2:05.

I DQ. More to come.
