I am still deciding what I want to do with mine as well. Underwhelmed with the stock stereo even after the secret mod to make it sound better.

It has been tried. Consensus: Polk dB series is a better investment. Even with the cost of adapters &spacers the benefits are greater than the OEM upgrade.

Another newbie question, do you think it would be better to get a 5channel amp and keep the stock head unit to save the steering wheel functions and hands free phone? i just think it will be weird to have the phone buttons do nothing once new head unit is installed, as i have seen that the radio functions can be retained..

Recently installed a pioneer hu with ASWC-1. Bluetooth buttons were retained except for the voice command button.

Did you have to install a new mic or use the factory?
Please send me the info on the cable you used

I'm almost positive your head unit will include a mic and it's really difficult to mod the factory one to fit an aftermarket head unit.

This is the information for the steering wheel controls
http://ae64.com/ASWC-steering-wheel-interface.htm

Here's some more information on retaining some factory features:
http://ae64.com/aftermarket-HU-insta...Impreza-BT.htm

SVXdc runs that site. He's a member on here and his guides/threads helped me a lot when installing my setup. If you want to retain the factory steering wheel controls, consider getting his 20 pin forward harness. It has 3 wires for the steering wheel controls that the generic metra harnesses don't have, meaning you'll have to tap into your factory harness for those functions.

+1 for SVXdc. I bought my cables and ASWC steering wheel controller and was able to retain my steering wheel controls on my Pioneer X3600BHS head unit.

Another +1 for SVXdc. Great guy and without question knows his stuff. I installed an Avic-X950BH which came with a mic and ran ASWC-1 to retain steering wheel controls. I can confirm that you are able to retain the steering wheel phone buttons. With the ASWC-1 I reprogrammed the voice command button to mute which for me is more convenient. At the end of it all was actually told that the new mic that came with the headset improved quality of sound and further reduced/eliminated background noise.

Can you send me a link of your head unit and mic location.
Thanks

One other question is about how that pioneer mounts up. Is it a nice fit?

There's some good pics in this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2493168

The OP has pictures of it with a dash kit, and there's a picture with the OEM subaru double din bezel towards the bottom of the page. Fits well in my opinion, but due to the angle of the head unit it easily gets washed out in sunlight. My 4600bt can adjust the angle, but it only goes up instead of down and doesn't help with glare so keep that in mind.
