Default '11 STI Brake Pedal Click / Tick / Stutter

I am having a strange and very random instance of the very first movement of my brake pedal starts off with what i can only describe as a audible and tactile click. It happened again this morning on the ride to work when slowing down with the clutch all the way in. I have had it happen irregularly a handfull of times and i am really just curious if there is any known cause for it. The pedal feels fine after it clicks, and i am just thinking it may be a spring reseating or something.

I have yet to get under the dash and take a look at it, and i am curious if anyone else has had a similar experience with any of their subaru brake pedals.

Could you be referring to pad clunk? Your problem doesn't sound quite like it, but I'll throw this out there just in case...

When you first tap the brakes in reverse after driving forwards, the pads will usually clunk once as they reposition themselves within the calipers. Same with going reverse->forward. Most aftermarket pads will clunk louder than OEM, but OEM will clunk too. It's 100% normal.

Nope, this will be driving down the street randomly braking. Im not sure if it happens with the clutch not depressed, I don't even realize when I have the clutch in or out anymore, it just happens.

The pedal assembly on the 3g Impreza (WRX and STI included) have been known to have issues sometimes flexing on its mount to the firewall. It is only spot welded in a couple places. This might be something you could have the dealer address, if you can reproduce it. They might tell you it is not there or that it is "normal" as some with the problem have been turned away by the dealer even when they know the firewall welds have cracked. The fix involves taking out the dash and re-welding the pedal assembly to the firewall.

Not sure if that is your issue, just an idea to check out. I have a heard a creak/clunk in my pedals which I believe is this very issue, sometimes the clutch sometimes the brake pedal. It comes and goes from time to time, so I have not addressed with the dealer until it becomes very obvious.

A clunk may be the best term for it. Ill keep an eye on it as much as I can.

It could be the hill assist depending on the timing of when you're pressing the clutch pedal. Sometimes if I'm stopped on an incline with foot on brake, if I press the clutch I can hear/feel some ticking in the brake pedal.

I turned the hill assist off and have had it off for weeks now. Best decision ive made since buying the car. It would regularly think that i was on an incline when i really was not and make the car feel awful when trying to start from a stop.

I have the same problem since I bought the car. Has about 5200 miles now. It comes and goes. Haven't had the issue for a month and then one day randomly click on the brake pedal.

so i got my car back after the dealership replaced the clutch master cylinder, which didn't do anything, the squeak is worse now.. not sure how they concluded that that was the source.
anyway i took a video, hopefully more ppl can help identify the problem

according to a member on iwsti:

The same member dug up a Subaru Shop Manual regarding brake booster, on page BR-25, there's a section saying:

C: INSPECTION NOTE:
If the vehicle is equipped with a brake assist mechanism,
the following may result when the brake
pedal is depressed. They are normal conditions
that occur when the mechanism is performing properly.
• Brake feel is soft when brake pedal is depressed
hard or quicker than usual.
• A light crack is heard when brake pedal is depressed
hard or quicker than usual.

Mine is exactly the same, but the crack is loud at times, and quiet at times, but can be felt through the brake pedal... the shop manual says it's 'normal', is there anyway to fix it or replace a certain part?

This happens on my 2011 on hard stops. I always thought it was the welds hmm
