Default OnStar FMV Now Available For 90 Million Older Vehicles

Quote:
Some of the options on new cars are so cool you almost want to buy a new car just to get the option. If you’ve been thinking about breaking your piggy bank for a new GM vehicle just to get OnStar, you can take that “for sale” sign off your old car and head down to your local Best Buy store for the new OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle), the first out-of-the-box application of OnStar’s “blue button” automotive safety and security services that can work on 90 million older vehicles.

OnStar FMV puts OnStar technology into a rearview mirror, and provides the same core features as the OnStar service built into new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles from General Motors, including:

• Automatic crash response triggered by an accelerometer in the unit that connects it to a trained OnStar emergency advisor in the event of a crash. The advisor can give the exact location of the crash to emergency responders using the mirror’s GPS location.

• Turn-by-turn navigation that lets you ask an OnStar advisor for directions to a specific address or location; the directions are then downloaded to OnStar FMV, which provides spoken instructions to get to the destination.
• Hands-free calling through the OnStar service itself or a Bluetooth connection to a mobile phone using a microphone tucked into the roofline or above the overhead console.
• Stolen-vehicle location assistance using OnStar’s GPS system.
• Emergency services summoned by pushing the red button, which brings specially trained advisors on the line to help in a crisis.
• Roadside assistance for non-emergency situations like a mechanical breakdown or a flat tire.

OnStar FMV goes on sale at Best Buy on July 24 and sells for $299.99, plus $75 for installation. Service plans for OnStar FMV start at $18.95 a month, or $199 a year. Other retailers now offering or soon to offer OnStar FMV include Car Toys, Crutchfield, Fry’s Electronics, Al & Ed’s Autosound and P.C. Richard & Son.
