1999 Legacy Outback passenger side/AC fan issues
The passenger side fan, ie the AC fan, will not engage on my 1999 legacy outback. At first I thought it was the fan so I went to the junkyard and purchased a new to me fan and installed that.
The new to me fan did not work but at the time I went ahead and hooked it up to the harness on the drivers side fan and it turned on just as it should, so the fan itself is good. I have checked all of the fuses in the interior box and engine bay box. I have not actually been able to test the relays but in the engine bay box there are 4 relays labeled A/C and I have swapped those around into all possible combinations and have not had the fan turn on/compressor fail to engage when pressing the A/C button on the hvac controls. Are there any other things/suggestions that I can try short of testing the wiring harness (which I am horribly not proficient at)? The car manages temp relatively fine but if I am running the A/C and under heavy throttle and climbing or in a lot of stop and go traffic with air temps above about 88 the temp starts to climb with the A/C on, it holds or drops as soon as I turn the A/C off, but August is normally our warmest month so I would like to resolve this! MODS I did cross post this to the legacy forum, apologies if that is an issue.

Just for clarity. The blower motor (inside cabin) works and blows air, but the AC doesn't kick on. Right? You're talking about the AC fan behind the radiator?

The cooling fans for the radiator are the problem. The secondary/passenger side fan is, as I understand it anyway, for additional cooling when utilizing the AC. Irregardless of engine temperature with the AC on only the drivers side radiator fan will engage. The passenger side fan will not turn on. I have removed the fan, plugged it into the drivers side radiator fan harness, and had it engage immediately, but when plugged into its own harness it never engages. I have checked all fuses and done as many swapping around of relays as could possibly be done to identify a bad one. |
