Default Clunk/knock upon engagement

What's up guys, I've been searching everywhere and can't find what I'm looking for. I have a 2013 WRX with about 3000 miles, and for the past few weeks it started making a noise (almost) every time first gear engages it makes a clunking/knocking noise. Doesn't always make it, but when it does it's definitely audible. I've babied this car since I got it and I'm on stock map. No idea why it makes this noise but it bugs the crap out of me. It goes into the physical location of the gear, only as we start rolling and the clutch is about to catch it knocks. Any help here?

The clunk comes without brake application just when you start rolling?

Yep after it starts rolling like just before the gear "catches" if that makes sense.

Where is the noise coming from? A broken motor mount Or trans mount could cause something in the drivetrain to hit the car when u apply torque to the system. 1st gear has the most reduction so that would be when it was the worst. How about if your cruising in first with clutch engaged ( in gear) and you give it a quick stab on the throttle. Same noise?

I'd try to determine if its related to clutch engagement or that the clutch is fine but the application if power causes the sound.

I'll check that today and see what happens. The noise sounds like its coming from like the close side of the engine or something. If its bad at enough I can feel the click in the pedals. Would it have anything to do with the differential?

I wasn't ever thinking diff yet. Your reply makes me wonder about the clutch. R u original owner? How many miles on car and how many on clutch. Would there be any reason u know of for the clutch to be messed up? Did this noise come outta nowhere or did it increase gradually?

Car's new. 3200 miles. I didn't even test the waters of this car until a few hundred after break in. I never noticed it before a few weeks ago. And it doesn't happen every time so I ignored it at first since the car's so new. But I can't ignore it anymore it drives me nuts and is seemingly more prominent now. But that could just be my mind messing with me.

My 2013 is doing the exact same thing. Just as it starts to roll I get 1 to 3 knocks. Sounds like its coming from the either the firewall or just under the dash. Started at about 3500 miles for me as well, became much more noticeable after kart boy sts and bushings were installed. I double and triple checked everything. Definitely annoying.

ABS self test? Usually more pronounced in the winter/cold weather. Search that and see if it's the same thing you're experiencing.

Its not the ABS test. In my legacy the ABS test happens the first time I hit 12 mph after first starting the car and it only makes the noise once. In my wrx I notice the ABS test at about 10 mph. I can reproduce the knocking at partial clutch engagement every time between 0-5mph. Literally just getting the car to budge and it makes the noise.

Eventually. My TOB also squeals on on cooler and humid mornings. My brother also has a 2013 and is going through the same. At first I thought it was just me being extra sensitive to it by driving with the radio off to listen for it. His car had about 8000 miles and he has brought it in twice under warranty. His tranny literally sounds like its falling apart sometimes. He has driven manuals his entire life so its not user error. If mine gets to that point or as loud as his I'll just sell it.

I'm starting to think it may be a crack in the firewall.

Sorry for the thread hijack

My 13 is doing the same thing after SPT sts install w/ kartboy bushings. I posted up a while back about it and got no response. I feel my knocking to be coming through the actual shifter itself, when disengaging clutch and getting rolling. I cannot visually see anything when the car is in the air and when engaged in 1st on a lift there is no load so the noise does not happen.

I have my first oil change coming up in a couple hundred miles and I'll bring it up then and see what happens.

Sorry, I took it to dealer for oil change and tech guy was really confused with the sound but figured out how to replicate it. Basically by pulling the clutch out really quickly but not letting the car go but a couple feet. He thinks it may be a mount or something. I was supposed to take it back and drop off the car to let them dig through it but got caught up with some things. So no official news yet.

I'm having similar issues with my '12 but usually only on start, doesn't make a difference if its been sitting all night or not. I can hear a pronounced click/knock when in reverse, usually when the clutch is just starting to catch. This will then also happen in first and sometimes second then goes away. It doesn't seem to happen as much when I don't have to back out in the mornings. Gonna bring it in next week and see what they say and will update, hopefully that might be helpful

Okay so I know a few guys were wondering and waiting to hear what the issue was because they were experiencing similar sounds, so here's what I found out:

It was something to do with my Perrin TMIC. For the guys experiencing the same thing, do you have an aftermarket top mount? Because I had to take my TMIC off a few times over the course of installing other things...AOS, throttle body hose issues..and after I took it off and reinstalled I haven't heard the sound in months. The way it was positioned must've been bumping something when the engine was under load/torque.

Been a long time, but hopefully this helps for anyone who searches the forums for the answer.

Interesting. I've had the same noise.. gradually happening more often. It sounds heavy, feels like its forward of my feet. I've tried removing and reinstalling my TMIC. I checked the pitchmount and it is very secure.

I have 25k miles (pretty hard 25 k) so I was thinking that its a clutch issue. Can anyone elaborate what the ABS test sounds like or link me to it?

If it does it multiple times it's not ABS

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the suspension. Sometimes it clunks when I've been in gear for a while.

My noise definitely comes up through the shifter...However I do actually here it on rough roads in gear just driving when the suspension is active. It could just be something suspension related resonating into the trans cross member and coming up into the shifter...The noise still has yet to become enough for me to take it in...
