Default Acura TSX Might Be Dropped from Lineup in Product Shuffle

Quote:
When the Acura TSX first went on sale in North America it broke with convention, proving a luxury sports sedan could not only use a 4-cylinder, but also be front-wheel drive. Having grown in size since then itís lost some of its charm.

Rather than re-invent the car, Acura may look to delete it completely from the brandís North American lineup as part of a new model strategy.

Acura is looking to introduce a Civic-based RSX sedan to North America, which would result in the brand having two smaller front-wheel drive sedans Ė which is perhaps one too many. In addition, Acuraís plans call for the TL to shrink in size, to avoid so much competition with the flagship RL. As a result of these changes the TSX could get squeezed out of the lineup.
If there is one thing that could save the TSX itís that it is based on the Euro-market Honda Accord and therefore much of the R&D expense is already covered.

Honda hasnít confirmed if it will axe the TSX, but it is one decision being considered.

Its just a FWD car. Not worth the price.
I wont be missing it.
Better to go with other luxury brands.

Not quite, it's the Acura version of the European Honda Accord, not the Civic.

They're a year too late for me, I was considering importing a Canadian CSX, but went with the Civic instead.

Depending on how they modify the Civic, this could be a pretty good thing.

Sad to see the TSX go, but the car I miss is the 2004-2008 model and it's gone already.

There's no 280hp version of the Civic, so like gpshumway said, the Accord would be a better comparison... and that's the problem: the Accord is pretty similar for more than 6 grand less fully loaded... way more when you compare the trims that most Accord buyers are looking at. And in many ways, it's more attractive visually than the angular wackiness of the TSX (those horrid fenders, too). I also miss the previous version of it, underpowered FWD that it was.

1. Acura can't sell the RL.
2. The TSX has never had the right options. Now you can get a more potent version, but people were calling for a turbo. And you can't get the V6 with a stick. Whats the point?

Canada already has the RSX (CSX) and nobody here buys it as it's a Civic with leather and NAV which isn't pulling the wool over anyone's eyes. I wonder if Acura will survive the next decade.

Agreed. I think the last gen TSX is one of the last examples of how well Honda could engineer a fun to drive FWD car. I was shocked at how absolutely lifeless the steering was on a TL loaner, a real night and day difference from the last gen TSX.

The Acura TSX is essentially the Accord for the rest of the world. I see it in Japan as Honda Accord. They have to engineer a larger and less sophisticated Accord for Americans.

Much like the Mazda 6. It's the Avenza in Japan, it's more compact and a better car.

like he said ^^

At an Autobahn rest stop:

That said, the TSX, while not as attractive as the previous style, is still by far the best-looking car in Acura's lineup, and the only one I'd have any interest in getting (if only they'd make the wagon version with a 6MT and the V6)...

I kind of like TSX sports wagon. If it wasn't $32k, that car would be on our list of car to buy later this year (too bad our budget is limited to under $30k).

well, you can already get the civic with nav and leather in the us, so it won't be as easy as the csx story is in canada, I'd guess. price will be a problem here too...you can get an accord with a v6 and leather for what acura charges for the 4 cylinder, and these are value times. europe and japan don't have to compete against their own product.

next, the new civic just got panned by nearly every reviewer. sounds like a great time to make it the starting point to replace a formerly successful product line.

finally, I think acura had most of what tsx people were asking for with the rdx powertrain. it's what distinguishes the rdx from a loaded crv. mileage was a little suspect, but enthusiasts trade mileage for performance. they didn't want to encroach on TL sales, but that's a bigger car that appeals to a different market segment. even as a halo option, it would have improved sales.

If it came with SH-AWD and a V6, I'd buy it. But that won't happen, since the JDM Accord won't be getting AWD any time soon. If ever.

And even if it did, it'd be easily over $40k.

I think Acura is probably on its way to being the next Saab, with only a small cult following that'll stay loyal, but unlike Saab, it'll only be a parasite to Honda. Not sure if going back to doing cars like the Integra/RSX or older TSX and TLs would help much.

It's too bad the current TL is so heinous. If they kill the TSX, they need to come out with a good looking sedan.

Acura should just re-badge all their cars as Hondas and sell them @ Honda price... that will be competitive.

I was never the TSX's biggest fan, but I think this shows more about the guys in charge at Honda than it does about the car.

But Acura products do not have what it takes to be true Honda. Road noise.

What would be exciting is if they drop the RDX turbo engine into the tsx and give it the S-AWD system.

Well if exterior appearances are the most important thing then, yes, I agree, but there's a lot of value to be added to the basically good Civic. In addition to the obligatory leather seats there are a lot more features which could differentiate the two:

- Bigger R-series motor (already on the CSX)
- More sound insulation
- Better stereo (Acura's surround sound setup would be nice)
- Automatic climate control (already available on the Civic Hybrid)
- 6sp manual (yea, I know I'm dreaming, but my 2011 EX yearns for it)

The Lexus ES is and always has been a gussied up Camry, people still buy them.

Honestly it's about time they let the TSX go. The way I see it is that the TSX and TL are becoming too close to each other, even with size. I can barely tell the two apart sometimes with the new design. And finally I hope there is a RSX replacement coming soon.
