Default Goodyear developing self-inflating tires

Quote:
Goodyear has come up with an novel invention that it is announcing today: self-inflating tires.

The tires have an inflation device inside each of them that would keep track of their inflation and add air as necessary. Not only would they be safer because tires would never fall to dangerously low inflation levels, they would also eliminate the need for cars' required tire pressure monitoring systems. Also, they would save gas, since Goodyear says underinflated tires decrease gas mileage by up to 3.3%.Goodyear says its "Air Maintenance Technology" will enable tires to remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics. All components of the AMT system, including the miniaturized pump, will be fully contained within the tire.

"While the technology is complex, the idea behind the...system is relatively simple and powered by the tire itself as it rolls down the road," said Jean-Claude Kihn, Goodyear senior vice president and chief technical officer. "A tire that can maintain its own inflation is something drivers have wanted for many years. Goodyear has taken on this challenge and the progress we have made is very encouraging," said Kihn.

Goodyear did not provide an estimate as to when this technology would be available at tire retailers, but said the timetable would be accelerated due to recent government research grants. The Department of Energy's Office of Vehicle Technology has awarded a $1.5 million research grant for commercial truck applications.

yea because I bet that internal pump will never fail. Also, I wonder if there will be a release for when the air pressure becomes to high due to high temps and or a stuck pump. Could you imagine the brown spot that would leave if your sitting in wal mart and your tires start blowing lol.

this is stupid! If people just checked the tire pressure like they are supposed to their would be no need for this.

It is possible that they are saving more energy with properly inflated tires than they are using to inflate them, but one has to assume the energy is coming from somewhere. If the energy comes from rolling down the road it is likely to increase rolling resistance, or the weight of vehicle, more specifically unsprung weight.

They've been "making" it for a while. There are still issues with road noise and wheel integrity under certain driving conditions if I remember correctly.

Id love a set as well.

Don't be so sure. Unless you never drive above 50 mph, at least. Maybe once they solve the temperature issues and vibration problems it might be a viable idea, but not anytime soon, and the last application to get them will be high performance cars.
