Default Face-Lifted 2012 Mazda 3 Hits U.S. Dealers in Mid-October

Quote:
Just the Facts:
  • The Japanese domestic market companion to the Mazda 3, called Axela, has begun production.
  • Both models will feature the automaker's new Skyactiv 2.0 direct-injection gasoline engine and six-speed automatic transmission.
  • The Axela/Mazda 3 is the second product to get the new Skyactiv technology.

HIROSHIMA, Japan Mazda Motor has begun production in Japan of the face-lifted Axela compact. Its Mazda 3 companion model will reach U.S. showrooms in mid-October as a 2012 model, a company spokesperson told Inside Line.

Both the Axela and the Mazda 3 will feature the automaker's new Skyactiv 2.0 direct-injection gasoline engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The cars are the second in Mazda's stable to get the Skyactiv engine and the first to combine the use of the Skyactiv 2.0 with the Skyactiv six-speed.

Mazda says the new automatic will "deliver a direct shift feel similar to (that of) a manual transmission."

Last month, Mazda in Japan introduced the face-lifted Demio sold as the Mazda 2 in the U.S. with a smaller Skyactiv 1.3 engine.

Mazda also plans to put its Skyactiv technology into the new CX-5, which will be introduced next month at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show and goes on sale in various global markets in early 2012.

Inside Line says: The face-lifted Axela goes on sale this fall in Japan.

A too-big smile now with too-big dimples. They actually made it worse.

The new 2.0 is a nice addition, though.

It could still be worse, I don't think yellow is an OEM colour option...yet...

It could just be the angle. it doesn't look that bad. Higher end models will have the fogs placed there so it may not even all black on the sides.

Are you guys serious? That looks WAY better than the out-going design! At least it looks competent.

The engine is what makes this car important.

But the current 3's look damn good in person minus the smiley face.

I love the way the 3 drives but I couldn't stand the smiley face so I picked it up in black. The dark paint next to the black grill hides it about as well as you possibly can. With that said, I think I actually prefer the look of my car over this new model.

When you use the manual shifting, they actually are quite fun to drive despite only having 168 HP.

Will the 3 still get a manual transmission option? Or are they going with the new automatic only? I think the front end in an improvement over the last.

I mean, lets be honest here, they're both terrible designs. This redesign does nothing to improve the looks.

Disagree. This facelift is what the original design should have been; it's much sleeker than the outgoing model.
