Default Spy Photos: Mazda 6 Hybrid Testing Alongside Drivetrain-Mate Toyota Prius

Quote:
The rumors of a Mazda 6 *Hybrid* have been on again and off again since the debut of the current generation car.

This prototype should put an end to any rumors: Mazda is working on a Mazda 6 hybrid and they've sourced the powertrain from Toyota.

Okay, that last part is a rumor, but let's look at the facts: Mazda is so busy with SkyActiv that they don't have the time or money to develop a hybrid. Toyota likes to lease out their hybrid technology. This Mazda 6 features the same gear-shift pattern and EV/Power/Eco modes as the Prius. Our man on the scene confirmed that on startup, the Mazda 6 made the same sounds (namely an electric whir up to a certain speed) as the Prius.

It's the most obvious solution and the quickest way for Mazda to get a hybrid into the lineup. Paired with SkyActive Technology, a Mazda 6 Hybrid could be a fantastically efficient driver's car from a company that knows how to entertain drivers.

Don't pay too much attention to the tweaks to the Mazda 6's body here, anything could happen between now and production -- sometime around 2013. The Toyota Prius currently manages 51 / 48 mpg according to the EPA.

I'm glad to see Mazda working with a big partner. I think it's clear that Mazda has been struggling without the help and synergy when with Ford. Mazda is just too small to develop a fresh and competitive, full lineup of vehicles.

I just hope Toyota doesn't invest in them or take a stake. The last thing we need is Toyota, Subaru and Mazda under one roof.

On the other hand, I would love if FIAT took a stake in Mazda.

I would love for Toyota, Mazda and Subaru to build partnerships! Mazda vehicles are cheap, very fun to drive cars. I want a Subaru that will add the "soul of a sports car" from Mazda.
