Default Exclusive: No more free iPads for Hyundai Equus

Quote:
Even though it is still running TV ads for it, Hyundai is about to put the kibosh on one of the most important features of its Equus luxury car: the Apple iPad that serves as a high-tech owners manual in its glove compartment, Drive On has learned.

CAPTION
By Robert Hanashiro, USA TODAY

The free iPad won't come with the Equus anymore with the start of the 2012 model year. The new cars start arriving next month. Instead, owners are going to have to depend on their old standby, the voluminous paper version of the manual, says spokesman Jim Trainor.Trainor says the iPads were only intended as a one-year promotion. The Equus only went on sale in the U.S. about a year ago. Oddly, Hyundai has mostly confined its television ads for the Equus only to the fact that it has an iPad as an owners manual, without talking about any attributes of the $58,000 car itself. The ads are narrated by actor Jeff Bridges, of course.

The electronic owners manual, brainchild of Hyundai America CEO John Krafcik, seen at right , is kind of a wonder. It has lots of interactive features like showing how the car's headlights can be steered from side to side -- with the slide of a fingertip.

"We got a lot of mileage out of it. People are talking about it," he says of the iPad. Now, "Every Equus has a (paper) owners manual in the glove box."

For Equus buyers who want the electronic owners manual for their own iPads or other tablets, Trainor says it will be available for download.

I love the sliding light marketing catch.
nearly all of these cars will be sold to the city people whom will have absolutely no place to take advantage of this feature. Heck, you could almost eliminate high beams on cars.
I haven't used mine for about 3 years now.

I'm also always amazed why people are so obsessed with xenon lights. Yeah, maybe they look cool when you're driving in the city but that's' a pretty expensive "looks" given the fact that in a brightly lit city there is absolutely no difference in a day to day usability over conventional halogens.

Who would want a Willard? Common knowledge they overtip. Hyundai is done for.

I got that reference but I was wondering how it played into his assertion that Hyundai was "done for" because the Equus no longer came with an iPad.

I'm curious - did they include an in-glovebox charging system with the free iPad?

I think they did - the Equus is pretty cushy inside.

I still love the Equus.

And if I can swing the $58k for one, I'll be able to by my own iPad.

i still don't think i could put myself in an equus no matter how 'cushy' it is on the inside, i'd rather have a subaru all day long, but i do agree the ipad concept was definitely a cool selling point

Any particular reason?

Trust me. Sit in/drive an Equus.
