Talking 2011 WRX - Exhaust muffler spacer / washer mod: Before and after Pics & Vid

Considering there was no concise thread dealing with JUST the muffler washer spacer mod. Well, now there is

So... since my exhaust already has to go thru a turbo, a couple of cats, a resonator, AND splits to two mufflers... it's pretty darn quiet IMO.

I decided to do the cheap and easy muffler spacer mod. Put a roll of washers between the mid-pipe and the axle back. So I get the sound of a muffler delete, but still get to see those nice shiny quad tips.

Stock

A trip to ACE and $4.43 later (qty 24 3/8-inch zinc plated steel washers @ $0.17 per)

Still have plenty of bolt thread left

And a before/after YouTube vid:

Initial Impression: I LOVE it. Then again, I came from a full exhaust on my '05 STi. It really opens it up, not too loud nor obnoxious IMO. I'll have to see how I like it after a week of commuting though for final judgment.

Looks like a big exhaust leak. Hope the fumes don't make you sleepy.

I was actually pretty impressed with the '11's exhaust note and volume from the factory. It sounds more like an SPT than previous years.

I hate the idea of doing this, btw. But if you end up liking it then keep it. There's a Legacy GT guy down here that did this and he was pleased.

Yeah, I'll see how I like it over the next few weeks and then probably decide to drop the coin on the Nameless Performance straight axle-back.

I did this to my 2011 WRX hatch when I had the SPT exhaust. Didn't take long to do, but it sounded HORRIBLE. I turned the car on and immediately knew I hated it. I drove around for a couple minute and confirmed it. Then I promptly removed the washers. Now I have the Q300, and it's a bit louder than the SPT, but not much. Neither sound anything like this mod. It's just my opinion, but I absolutely hated the sound of this.

Note: I did it on the hatch. You did it on the sedan. Nameless does a muffler delete for the sedan, but decided it didn't sound right on the hatch and went for a muffler-ed design. While this mod does sound decent on the sedan, it still is an exhaust leak. Welding some straight pipe in place of the mufflers would be preferred, but I guess this is a quick/cheap option. Interesting video though. Now people can decide for themselves without wasting an hour actually doing it

Wow... Wtf were u thinking? U do realize ur car might be more restricted right... Think of it this way, u have a hose and water turned on max, u cut the hose and separate the two by 2"... U no longer have water going all the way out the hose like its supposed to, instead its all over the place where it was cut and very little out the end.

It does not make it more restricted.

I tried this "mod" before getting my TurboXS catback and hated it.

haha awesome

Who cares if it costs 4$ as long as it produces the desired effect? What harm is it doing (unless theres something that can melt around it)
Side note, this only works with the sedan, a cut out on the hatch sounds horrid...

i unbolted my muffler...sounded pretty good aside from the exhaust bouncing off the muffler flange which is pretty much what you are getting. idk...seems dumb to spend $1000 for a quad tip catback when u can get similar sound just by taking a couple bolts out...on the other hand its just really ghetto...lol. either way leaving the mufflers with an intentional leak is not the way to go...you could maybe squeeze a tip in there that points the exhaust down, but pointing it at the muffler flange is stupid. anyone ever try to gut the muffler?
