Hey Calvin, is that you?!

Well, we just got back from our first race with mixed results, but overall a very positive weekend.

The car was pretty quick in practice and qualifying. Faster than we predicted considering the current state of mods on the car. Here's the complete list of performance mods we'd completed on the car:

Camber plates front and rear
Race springs on adjustable perches front and rear
22mm sway bar rear
17" race tires

That's it. Our custom race shocks were not completed in time, so we were on stock shocks with race springs. Talk about bounce! And the engine was completely stock. Well, not totally stock. We drained the coolant and refilled with fresh water and Redline Water Wetter and replaced the engine oil with Redline 10W30. That's really it. Yes, we ran with the stock air filter. We didn't even get a chance to take off the air conditioning! When I say stock, I mean STOCK!

So, being 1.2 seconds back from the pole in qualifying and within .6 seconds of the rest of the grid in front of us wasn't too bad. We can't wait to start tuning the engine and finishing the suspension.

We gridded up for the race and got ready for the green flag. USTCC races are standing starts, which means we are all stopped, the green flag drops and all hell breaks loose. I'd never launched any 4 wheel drive car before, let alone our new race car. I was holding about 4500 rpm when the green flag dropped. I slipped the clutch to keep the car in the power band and the car bolted forward. I got such a good start that I immediately caught up to the Integra gridded 4th. There was no room on the track to pass, so I took to the dirt with the left tires and motored on past. So, with 3 seconds of the race done, we'd gone from 6th to 4th!

I immediately went into defensive mode because the cars I just passed all had a power/weight advantage on us. I held off John Merris in the Integra for a few laps until he got a nice leave out of the hairpin and motored on past me into the sweeper. Nothing I could do. Albert in the Mazda MX6 did the same thing in the same spot 2 laps later.

It was wierd being followed so closely by those cars because all I could hear were their engines. We still had the stock exhaust, all 3 cats and the stock muffler on the car. I couldn't hear our car when I was all by myself, let alone with cars all around me. The rev limiter was used several times during the race!

About halfway through the race I suddenly heard loud grinding from the right front wheel and felt the vibration through the steering wheel. At first I thought maybe the plastic fender liner fell out onto the tire. But by the next lap I could feel the steering go a little wierd.

I pulled into the pits and Shiv, Alex (Imprezer) and Joel (Gat) jumped out to see what was wrong. They tugged on the wheel and couldn't see anything wrong, other than crap on the wheel. So I went back out to try and putter around the track to finish the race and get some points. But on that lap the steering really went crazy and I could see and smell smoke. I pulled back into the paddock and parked it for the day.

We'd lost the right front wheel bearing. Now don't freak out about the wheel bearings in the WRX. Our particular car was one of several that was used in the press event down in Florida. Our car was abused for nearly 500 miles by crazy automotive journalists on a special rally course that was set up to show off how tough these cars are. And they stood up amazingly well. But once you start really pounding on cars, whether it be off road rallying or high g-force road racing, wheel bearings need to be inspected and serviced. So we are replacing all the bearings on the car and will be inspecting them from race to race to make sure that they are healthy. We don't expect them to be a problem in the future.

Off the racetrack the car was a huge success. Several i-club members came down to cheer us on and it was great to have their support. People from all over the paddock were stopping by to see the car. There were a few times where there were so many people around it that we could hardly even see the car! And it's definitely a cool feeling to be driving through the paddock and see other race drivers and teams, who have their own race cars, pointing at you and talking to each other as you drive by in a shiny new WR Blue WRX. This car is definitely a hit at the track.

So, with 2 months to the next race, I think we are doing well. We are on the pace already with a mostly stock car and it's only going to get better from here. We will be keeping everyone posted on our progress and be letting you know the URL to our website when it is complete.

Yes, you should have come with us. It was well worth the camping in the snow Friday night Me and Kizerian are watching the video I made of the race tonight.

Post Vegas WRX race

Well, the race didn't go to well for the Subaru, but it was an incredible race. I wish we could see more events like that. The Subaru was out in the first few minutes with mechanical problems. The car was still in the very early satages of preparation. It still had the stock shocks! But it looked like it has very good potential to be a very fast car on the track. The whole crew was really cool and willing to discuss everything about the car and I wish them a lot of luck at the future races.

How about putting together a end of year season in review tape for about $19.99 each since there is no coverage. I'd buy one.
