Default Kia apparently confirms new RWD coupe-like concept for Frankfurt

Quote:
Rumors have been floating around Kia saying that the Hyundai-owned Korean make is in the works with a rear-wheel drive car. Now though, Kia apparently has confirmed that they will be unveiling a new concept at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

It is said to be a “coupe-like” concept with RWD and four doors. Supposedly, Kia said it will have rear-wheel drive, so it is safe to assume that the Hyundai Genesis platform will have something to do with it. And lastly, the rumor also suggests that it will have a V8. No other details have been released, so if Kia is keeping their cards this close, it could be a big model for the company.

Along side the rumor, word has it that Kia will also be introducing some new updates for its engines and transmissions. A new 2.0L direct injected four-banger is in the works to make into the 2012 Soul to help optimize power and fuel economy. Also, with the new Veloster just about to launch, a new six-speed dual-clutch transmission is on the “immediate horizon,” said some Kia insiders. They closed their remarks saying that a seven-speed DCT is also not too far behind and is estimated to pop around in two years time

That is certainly an out-there concept.

But Autoblog reported that it might be slotted between the Genesis and Equus, which seems highly unlikely, more like sub-Genesis, just above Optima.

I'll keep my eyes open for it in the Frankfurt show coverage.

I don't say this about concepts very often, because I know they're concepts and people should have fun taking them whatever direction they wish, but... barf! Looks like a 2025 Dodge Avenger or Stratus.

Kia’s Frankfurt motor show star is this dramatic rear-drive saloon. The currently unnamed model will be the first in a series of new concepts that Kia will use to explore new market segments and prove its capabilities of building style-led models above its current range of traditional hatchbacks, saloons and crossovers.
Official details of the four-door concept are scarce, but Autocar understands it be based on sister firm Hyundai’s Genesis saloon, with a powerful V8 petrol engine featuring under the bonnet.
See pictures of the Kia concept
The concept, believed to have been designed in Kia’s Frankfurt design studio, provides a striking message about Kia’s future expansion plans and will provide the blueprint for the firm’s new design direction under chief designer Peter Schreyer.

“I believe this car is a strong statement from Kia,” says Schreyer, formerly of Audi. “We are ready to fast forward to an all new chapter.”
The muscular concept, still partially hidden from some angles in these early teaser pictures, features a bold, purposeful front-end with Kia’s new familiar ‘Schreyer grille’. It gets a gently sloping roofline, heavily sculpted sides and a sleek design for the rear lights.

Schreyer believes his concept is “roaring with energy and ready for take-off” from all perspectives. The interior, which is barely visible in the pictures, is said by Kia to be “a sophisticated and elegant four-seat cockpit”.

The Korean firm insists the concept is more a statement of intent rather than a preview of a new model in a German-dominated market segment never before occupied by Kia.

The saloon concept will be followed up by a drop-top version of the Soul aimed at the US market and a small front-drive roadster, based on Cee’d mechanicals. These concepts are expected to be launched at the Detroit and Geneva 2012 motor shows respectively.

“We have made good progress recently,” Kia’s vice chairman and CEO, Hank Lee, told Autocar last month. “But it is now important for us to improve our brand power. Concepts like these will help a lot with that. But we are prepared to take our time. We will test plenty of ideas before we make any decisions about production.”

Other new Kias on display at Frankfurt will be a three-door Picanto and a facelift for the Soul.

If AWD is not a consideration, Kia is kicking Subaru's butt on product design.

If AWD is a consideration, it is all the more aggravating to see Kia kicking Subaru's butt, and still holding out for the AWD Kia doesn't have.

FOR PETE'S SAKE HIRE A DESIGNER AS CAPABLE AS THIS CONCEPT IS, SUBARU!

If the Legacy, or the next-generation WRX sedan were half as sleek as that Kia concept, my next purchase would be a no-brainer.

I'm confused... the image in the first post is substantially different than the series of images in post #4. What gives?

Or just tell the Subaru designers to start ripping off Jaguar too.

Actually, their designer is from Audi, and the new Kias have an audi flair, and their design studio is in Germany.

We can play the "looks like" game until the cows come home with any and all brands.

But the fact of the matter is, aesthetics are a valid endeavor, and Subaru needs to get the point.

^^ Agreed.

I wish the angles weren't so extreme on the renderings, its a little hard to get a sense of the car. Can't wait to see pics.

I mean, c'mon, its a KIA and it looks this good. Pretty huge turnaround, copying or not.

Hip - While I understand that production subarus aren't known for their looks or style at least the concepts match. There's nothing I hate more than following a concept I like and being very confused at the final production car.

Now, if this borrowed head of design would actually have a bit of influence on the final vehicle, then that's another story. But I just don't think a top of the line designer is really what subaru needs right now.

I respectfully disagree. Less than 5 years ago I wouldn't even think about a Kia. Now, based on design alone, I'd buy one over a Toyota, Honda, Nissan, etc. If Subaru could combine a good looking car with a fuel efficient awd drivetrain and proven reliability, they would have an absolute hit on their hands.

Hyundai / kia have done nothing other than offer the good looks.

Hyundai and Kia have been improving their quality, as well as their design... and they have branched into RWD, rather than just FWD.

But they still don't offer AWD cars, other than cross-overs.

Subaru hasn't upgraded their AWD drivelines in a while, aside from adding a base CVT option, and now a new FB flat-4.

They don't offer an H6 that is anywhere near the RS3800 V6, let alone the Tau V8, even though the EZ36 could probably do it, if it were paid some R&D further attention, and backed by a transaxle that can handle it.

The WRX doesn't meet the Sonata/Optima's power level, or efficiency. STI beats the power level, but not the efficiency level.

And none of the Subarus come anywhere CLOSE to being as appealing to the eye as the new Hyundais/Kias.

Why does aesthetics need to be a hurdle to overcome, when it is obvious that it can instead be a compelling attribute to attract people.

BTW... the Impreza Design Concept may bear resemblance to the production Impreza, it was far more sleek than the production car proved to be. The disappointment you describe, Airborne_J, with concepts going to production, doesn't exclude Subaru in that case.

I think Subaru fired the guy who penned the previous Legacy, which IMO was the best looking Subaru ever made. If they could get him back (or stop feeding him meth) maybe they'd have a good looking car again.
