Default 2011 WRX STi - Winter Tires and Rims?

My birthday is coming up, and I would like to get some winter shoes for the Subi... But I also want rims.. nothing too expensive on the rims since it is for winter/snow driving... but I was looking for ideas, recommendations, experience? Thanks!

Why not buy new rims for summer and put winter tires on your stock rims?

sti rims are kind of wide. You might as well buy narrower (ie. 7 or 7.5 inch rims) for cheaper and also more efficient snow tires.

Find the cheapest pieces of crap you can bolt up + good snow tires and remember.....snow tires are meant for temps below 50 degrees, so put them on earlier than actual snow and remove later than actual snow disappearing.

@rmj - I thought about that.. but I kinda like the stock rims (until someone who shall remain nameless ran the front driver rim against a curb at least.. need to get that buffed out). NOt really ready to drop a bunch of $$$ on rims and tires right now - would rather go with cheap rims and good winter tires.

Although I do want cheap rims - I want something that still looks "nice"... doesn't have to be fancy or anything - but I don't want something that looks like it came off of a 1990 Kia or something.. LOL. Good call on the narrorower comment though - was thinking of going to the junkyard and seeing if there were rims from a wrx or impreza or something - I know very little about tires so I am assuming the lug pattern from a stock impreza will fit - then I can get some decent rubber.

FOr sure on getting the tires on "before" winter, etc. My birthday is in Sept... I am thinking of putting them on at the end of Oct or beginning of Nov, and keeping them on until probably May since spring-time here in CO can be sketchy.

I bought a set of 2010 oem rims off a guy for 400.00. I figure its gonna cost me another 700 for the blizzaks I want. Point is, you can find good deals on rims if you look without sacrificing looks completely

I bought some '04 WRX wheels for $220 and am mounting some dunlop wintersport 3Ds on them. The wheels are 16x6.5", perfect for the winter. Narrower wheel = better snow traction.

But since you have an STI you have the brembo clearance issue, so you would be best off getting some 17" wheels that clear them.

Totally did not think about the brembo brake issue... good call because I was thinking I would actually go with a 16".. I would hate to have ordered rims and find out they do not fit - good call thank you!

These wheels work, if you want steel wheels. Yes, they clear the brakes. They are 17" steelies from a CR-V.

So mrkyle, I have a set of 205/60/16 Blizzak's that I used on my previous car that need new rims to fit on my 2011 WRX. If I pick up a set of 16x6.5 rims w/ the 5x100 bolt pattern, is there anything else I need to be mindful of (namely, offset)? It seems that I would be fine with a set of 2004 WRX rims, but before buying anything I want to be sure.

Thanks in advance for your help - I feel like a complete noob, but I suppose I kind of am

Don't forget 5x114.4 vs 5x100 too.

Tirerack has some nice winter packages you should check out. Guaranteed to fit.

Yes, cheap rims and good snows, you will not regret it.

Hey all, quick question. Will winter 225/40r18 tires fit on the stock sti rims. The summer tires are currently 245/40r/18.

Thanks

Seriously guys - call the guys at tirerack.com. If Luke is still there, talk to him. They will outfit your car with tires/wheels that match your budget, your driving preferences, and deliver them to your door (or your installer's door). Don't take advice from random dudes on the web, talk to experts and have some peace of mind.

Even though they are based in the States, tirerack is great for Canadian delivery too. Call the toll free and they will walk you through all the important stuff you will want to consider before buying a winter tire. Amazing people.

There's a huge thread somewhere on here as well that they regularly respond to for free advice on tires. Someone post a link if they find it?
