Default More than 200 R8s sitting in US dealers.

Quote:
Supercar shopping isnít as easy as waving a certified check in the air. Thing is, if you just found out the Ferrari 458 Italia existed, you canít buy one. Youíll probably wait a whole year or more. If you didnít know the Mercedes SLS AMG was nearing completion in 2009, too bad. Nearly all of the 500-per-year allotment is taken through the 2012 model year. A new Porsche 911 GT2 RS is ó nope, sorry, two of the four in this country are used.

And Warren Buffet says the rich have it too easy.

But thanks to Audi, they can go burn $172,000 in their checking accounts today. According to Cars.com, there are more than 200 R8s sitting at US dealers, waiting for Lamborghini buyers to cancel their Gallardo orders.

Audi wonít recommend this (they own Lamborghini, which donated the Gallardoís 5.2-liter V-10 engine), but dealers should smear every R8ís windshield in neon dry-erase marker. A LAMBO at $30,000 OFF! Why WAIT??

Two minor things. A Porsche 911 Turbo S is much, much faster than the R8 for the same money, and a Corvette ZR1 is faster for much less money.

Who, exactly, cares? Next to the R8, both look like Amish buggies.

Click on the video below ó youíll get the idea.

I would take one of these over any of the others mentioned if I had the money just because they look so nice. Of course I may think differently if I really did have the money. Time to get some lottery tickets.

A used v8 is going to be a hell of a deal soon.

I'm not so sure I'd rather have the Audi than the Porsche. My opinion isn't worth much though, since I'd have to sell my soul for the cheapest car, the ZR1, then figure out what to do for the other $109,800...

It's not exactly true what they're say about the 458 Italia or the SLS availability. If you don't want to custom order your supercar exactly, they are always available in the Dupont Registry. In addition, you can always buy someone's slot on the waiting list. I think many of the buyers on the waiting list for these vehicles are actually speculators looking to flip for a profit.

A month or so ago, I visited the local Audi stealership and test drove an S4.

Anyway, they had two new R8's on the showroom floor. Stunning, to say the least. What was also stunning were the $180K/$190K price tags. There's a lot of cars in that price territory I'd be looking at....

Is that the price for the R8 V10?

When I first saw this thread, I got confused and was thinking of the RX-8, since I had just come from Autoblog.com and read an article about the RX-8s having officially ended production or something, haha.

$180,000 RX-8??? oh my...

I can't believe this car costs that much. It doesn't seem to have much personality. Not even as much as some other audis. And I don't agree that it's that good looking. I know I'm in the minority, but it's got some good angles and some awful ones.

Imo this is more than likely the reason for slow sales. I think the R8 is a gorgeous car but for that kind of money there are other cars I would rather have.

I believe these were alot closer to $110k when they first came out as V8's. $180k is big money and I would have a hard time buying Audi over much more exciting choices.

But don't forget that this is now the V-10, and it's had a few ugprades since then. I think it first had 525 hp, now it's 560 or something, much closer to its output in the engine bay of the Gallardo. So they're not just increasing the price for fun.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's my number one choice either.

They don't.

VWAG owns Lamborghini.

And I'd buy an Evora or used NSX over the R8.

The R8 is actually selling very well for a car in this price range. They're selling about 100/month, so 200 cars is just a 2 month supply, and you have to keep in mind that this is a halo model for a volume brand. Audi wants dealers to have R8s in their showrooms.

Dude... GTR does not even COMPARE to the R8. Go sit in both and you will see why. The GTR looks and feels and sounds like a slightly upmarket Z car, and the R8 looks and feels and sounds like a supercar. It's not about the numbers.

That said, I would take a Porsche GT3 over either version of R8, among others. Lots of good competition at $172k as previously stated.

One issue is that they will not allow (at least in Dallas) potential customers to drive them. A family memeber really wanted one of the v8 cars but was told he would have to buy it first if he wanted to drive it. So we went on down the road to the Porsche dealer and they had no problem letting him drive a turbo cab or any other car, and now he is a happy porsche owner.

Other than the e-gear tranny being an On/Off switch, I highly recommend the R8. Would love to have a drive in the GT-R for some apples to apples comparison. I think driving the ZR1 like I drove the R8 would at least end up with melted rear tires if not the car wrapped around a tree.

Its not a slow seller here in Germany... I see way more of them than high end Porsches. It looks like they sell them here buy 1 get the second one half off.

For a car in that price range 100 units a month is very good.
