Default DOH! MRT vs. Borla opinions needed!

Ok, I never realized the MRT headers were SO CHEAP! So now im in a delema. Anyone who has the MRT OR Borla headers please let me know how much of a performance difference you felt and ALSO how much noise increase there was. Also the CEL issue, and how much of an issue it actually IS (is there a fix for the MRT's).

Thanks to all who respond.

i gotta go with Borla, cause i don't think MRT makes them for the 2.2, so I wouldn't know

Post MRT

I got the MRT system. The install was easy and the sound isn't too ricey.
I need to get down to the track soon, but sadly the butt dyno hasn't been too impressed. It's hard to tell.
I just failed emmissions w/ them as well. So I put the stock system back on. (I also have an Injen CAI) I don't think I can feel much of a difference compared to the stock system. Does any one have any quarter mile times? Plus the damn thing squeaks and rattles all over the place.
Anyway, I will hopefully be proven wrong next wed. I got to be in the low 15's high 14's range.... hopefully

I wrote up a huge comparison of Borla vs MRT (I've had both). It may be one of the threads in the sticky above. If you search for my name with Borla and MRT and smog you'll probably find it.

Come on guys...the reason I put this post up was cuz I ORDERED the Borla headers (for cheap) then discovered the MRT's for only 40$ more. I was asking about the issues between them.

Funny thing is that I asked Borla when they would ship on Tues (30th) and they said it would ship on Aug 12th. I call back today (31st) to CANCEL my order only to find out they SHIPPED YESTERDAY!.

DOH, now im in a bigger delema. I might just stick with he borlas....but I dunno.

they are on sale, but not dropped that much- depends if you are single or dual port too. If you're dual then you've got yourself a set for $309, if not then $499 shipped (SPO motorsports)

MRT will hands down show a better performance increase on the dyno/at the track/and on the street. My MRT system took away any irregularities in the power band. Power delivery is actually smoother. Borlas provide of a mid range increase. Think of it as kind of excentuating the rpm range where the stock engine makes good power (4000-5500). If you go with MRT do not get there muffler section. Restrictive.

Also remember the price of the MRT Header includes a hi flow cat

dcrawford : have you had any fitment issues with you MRT headers ? I am expecting mine to arrive in a few weeks and now I hear about this rattling and noise bit. Also, is yours loud ? I am trying to keep my car quiet (hell am slapping TWo resonators on my mid pipe LOL)

It fit like a glove. In fact it fit better than the Borla did (but my Borla was old and had cracked and been welded several times).

Loud? That's kind of hard to say. The can is what makes an exhaust loud...and since I have a Borla can it's fairly wide open so it is a bit loud. However my intake is the noisy bit on my car...when I am at WOT the intake sound fully overpowers any exhaust sound.

Good to hear. I know the can I have is an open design and will be very loud. Imagine two N-1 type exhaust put together ala dual cannon muffler style.whoa boy. It finally arrived but I am waiting for the headers to do everything at one shot. So I figure if I have two resonators put into the midpipe it should shut it up very well. As for the intake well I can live with a loud intake. Hope I can pass emissions with this setup.

i don't know if dcrawford's response was to you or not, but from what i've found out, you can use the 2.5 if you have dual port (some 2.2's had single while others had dual, you gotta check it out). Were any 2.5's single port? It could open up more options for people...like me

If it does, bust out the Naval Jelly and get rid of it and repaint it with high temp paint.

I put my MRT exhaust back on and I do feel a little bit of power down low. The car seems to breath better. Whether this is due to the bigger piping or better design (or both) is hard to tell. But I don't think the borla system can be that far off in performance. Plus, You get a life long gurantee or something with the borla and it's loud as hell if you like that.

My MRT still rattles around whenever I shift or pull my car out of the drive way. Does anyone think those Kartboy hangers would help? Also, since wieght is being distributed differently, and because the header is suspended from that little hanger connected to the transmission, that any damage might occur to the tranny? I mean, I can push a little bit on the midsection and watch the transmission jump around. I'm just being paranoid right?

I wouldnt worry about it.

I was pushing and pulling on that hanger for an hour when I installed my borla headers. I wouldnt worry too much.

I just want to mention that the MRT was quiet when breaking in, but after 1000 miles with it, the sound has gotten louder. This is a good thing, guys. I don't know how to check for the db sound rating, but all I can say is that it's more audible from within the car than from the first few weeks I had this.

Rattle? Yeah, got that too. Still working on it.

Thanks Darby I am here to find out more too.
Is the Borla header more noticeable on the inside of the car?
I have the Borla axle back now and its quite noticeable in the cabin. (music to my ears but too loud for my family )
