Default Next Golf GTI spied

Our spies catch new three-door VW Golf GTI and standard five-door models testing in the US

Quote:
The new Volkswagen Golf GTI is on its way. These are the first images of the full-bodied Mk VII Golf, proving that it's on track for a 2012 launch.

Unlike previous spy pictures, these were taken in the US and give much more away in terms of design and detail. Looking lower and longer than the current Golf, this is the first time Volkswagen has used optical camouflage together with some extra black masking over the front and rear. This indicates the next Golf will get some big design changes.

Slated to ride on the new, more versatile MQB chassis platform, our pictures show two distinct prototypes: a three-door Golf GTI and a standard five-door version.
The prototypes left the garage together with a benchmarking Audi S3, indicating what we can expect in terms of performance from the GTI variant.

The three-door GTI pictured features big wheels and twin chrome exhausts. On the inside, it's likely tostick with the traditional hallmark features of the performance model withas sports seatsas well as the very latest sat-nav system.
A wide range of TSI supercharged and turbocharged editions will be offered, including a flagship 2.0-litre producing a storming 300bhp for the Golf R, and an efficient 65bhp 1.2-litre engine capable of returning 70mpg. Volkwagen is also planning a 100mpg plug-in hybrid, as well as an all-electric version, called the e_BlueMotion.

Diesel engines will include 1.6 and 2.0-litre TDI offerings. As standard, entry-level cars will drive the front wheels through a six speed manual gearbox, while flagship machines are tipped to offer the firm's seven-speed DSG semi-automatic gearbox. Four-wheel-drive will be available on the most powerful cars.

According to our reports, the new Golf is primed to appear at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012, before going on sale in October.

It does look big, it actually looks like a mini-van on the side shot. Hopefully the camo is hiding something nice under it, even though I'm not a VW fan. And a 65hp engine does seem rediculous, imagine merging into traffic with that.

Looks like a Americanized golf/gti since it has no ballasts in the front headlights. Let me guess vw is selling a lot of 16k jettas that are produced cheap and now its the golf that will receive the same treatment.

You mean projector lenses. And even the current GTI only offers HIDs/Projectors as an option (AFAIK).

But I agree, the cheap-o Jettas are selling like hot cakes, and not it's the Golf's turn to take a turn for the worse.

You know, a food that has the highest calories for the lowest price isn't necessarily the best food. Likewise, there's more to being fun to drive than HP numbers.

^ yeah, but good food is high in taste.

anything good, great, amazing, etc. is outstanding in some respect. with cars, it just so happens that hp is a common characteristic that is looked at.

either way, **** gti's and their stupid owners who don't understand the irony of their profile... looking at you again, layman. enjoy petting your nice dash as i zoom past your overpriced idiot transporter.

and, on top of that, civic si's have been doing 200hp all day for many years even without a turbo. their powerband is pretty impressive when the valves open up, they cost less than gti's, and are more reliable.

i don't even need to bring wrx's in the conversation. gti's don't even compare to civics!

200HP + $600 APR flash = 254 HP / 303 ft-lbs torque, about the same as a Stage 1 WRX.

Yeah, it's still FWD, and that part sucks. In fact, lots of things about it piss me off, but in my opinion, it still out handles a WRX, and with the APR flash, it's plenty fast enough.

<-- Owned a WRX for 3 years and an STI for 7 years.

The Civic has a crappy interior and no torque (that's why they dropped the 2.4 in there). Yes it is reliable. But VAG is getting more reliable. The GTI is great package for the price. The WRX is NOT RELIABLE and cheap inside, handles well like a AWD Subby

I was trying to be nice about it. He is a WRX fanboi. For the price with out options it is great choice. Also, the engine is the most advanced in the group.
