Default 2011 WRX clutch feels jerky/sticky

Alright guys so heres whats going on. I can't tell exactly when this happened but it came out of nowhere. I do track my car on occasion but this was a while after an event so I can't connect the two. But heres what I'm experiencing...

Ill be driving, see a nice open strip of road, open it up a bit just to reassure my love for my car and put that big grin on my face. Feels great and theres no issues under acceleration. Then after the hard acceleration the clutch gets this... almost "sticky" feel where its not smooth and kind of jerky as I depress and release the pedal. Very strange, but if I pump the pedal for a little while the "stickiness" or jerky feeling goes away and it drive fine.

Im not a mechanic but I know my way around. I don't know what would be causing this and its strange to me that it goes away after pumping the pedal. To me that makes me feel like its a lack in fluid.

But whatever it is, Im not sure what causes it and wanted to get your opinions. There have been no modifications made besides the kartboy shifter to the drivetrain.

Bubbles in the clutch lines perhaps?

Thats the only thing that would make sense to me. But it only happens when you drive it hard. Normal driving it doesn't happen. I was just trying to get your guys opinion on here. I can just make an appointment with the dealership and have them check it out.

At about 6k miles I burned my clutch really bad one time and I noticed it felt different. It would almost shudder when engaging during accel but it's really subtle. I'm assuming there must be some uneven wear or deposition to the clutch disc or flywheel. Now at 15k miles it's actually a little better but it's still there. Clutch holds strong still so it doesn't seem to matter. I've been stage 2 (300/330) since 4k miles.

Does it happen when actively engaging power or when in neutral and just depressing the clutch pedal?

It will happen if I'm releasing it into a gear or neutral. When it happens I put it in neutral and pump the clutch until the feeling goes away.

Mine is doing the same thing. It happens when i first drive the car. After a few shifts the pedal gets smooth again. It almost feels like it's a cable that is snagging on something.

Hmmm...interesting, same thing here!

2011 WRX also! 35 000km, notice the same feeling a couple of times since a month, only after driving it hard!

And it goes away after a couple of shifts...

Hey guys I'm new to this forum and this is my first reply. I have the same exact problem with my '11 WRX. I'll drive hard and pull through second and third and then my clutch pedal with be sticky or sponge like. The difference I have though is that when I come to a full stop and pump the clutch half way a couple of times and hold it half way, I'll get a loud knocking metal on metal sound that coincides with the speed of the engine. It will last for about 5 to 10 seconds then it will stop and my clutch will be smooth again. I'm dumbfounded and what's sad is that I'm a diesel tech for NYC sanitation lol(we have automatic trans though). Any thoughts would be helpful as my coworkers and I can't put a definite finger on anything.

Alright I'm definitely glad I posted on here about this. Nice to know I'm not alone thats for sure. Nobody that has contacted me has had it fixed yet so this is still unresolved.

Let us know if you have had this checked out and have more info on it!

This sounds different than my problem, and actually a lot more dangerous. So pretty much the clutch is half engaged and then will just pop out the rest of the way?? I would be scared to rear end somebody in stop and go

My clutch master was replaced under warranty a few thousand miles ago in my '11, leaky assembly. Felt worlds better after being replaced and properly bled.

I am experiencing the same thing. Started a couple hundred miles ago clutch sometimes feels "rubbery" or notchy and vibrates more...but at other times its totally smooth. Catch point etc all the same though. At first I thought I was imagining things, but definitely felt different. Might get it checked out with my next oil change. There was a thread on clubwrx where someone with my exact same symptoms took theirs to the dealership and nothing was done. Surprise.

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum, so pardon any stupidity.
After having the same issue, I brought my car into the dealer as my 2011 only has 8500 miles on it. The clutch would get sticky and almost felt "knotchy" or like it vibrated when letting it out. It would only happen under hard acceleration while shifting from 2nd through 5th, but would go away after pumping the clutch 3-5 times. They drained the clutch fluid and told me it was because it was "toasty" (The fluid not the clutch). Haven't launched the car but I do sit in too much stop and go traffic as I live in the Tri-State area. Car drives fine now! Hope this helps.

I have to same problem but what does "toasty" mean in reference to the clutch fluid.

I'd think he's talking about the fluid getting over heated. I don't really remember how they fixed it on my car but I'd assume it was related to the cylinder or the fluid. Who knows. Maybe air in the line?

Haha, jordanc15, why have we never talked about this?! I have this problem bad! Here I am, months after it started and I'm looking for an answer and you have a thread on this subject. And we have been going to the same meets... wow. So what was the end result? What did you end up doing? I thought my clutch was going, but it's sounding like it's a different issue?

I know this is an old thread, but I noticed this problem after a few hard accelerations in my '11 today. Is the consensus that it's the clutch fluid/throw-out-bearing? Might call my dealership tomorrow to see if it's easy to replace.

had this problem...dealership "lubed the clutch fork" and the issue went away. This was about a year ago and the issue has not come back.

Okay, just got back from the dealer. Obviously they weren't able to replicate the problem so they just "lubed the slave bearing". Maybe that's the same as the clutch fork, maybe not. Anyway hopefully that fixes or at least helps it.

I may be able to help.

My 2006 350Z had the exact sticky spongy feel described here. I changed the clutch fluid myself using a turkey baster and it completely fixed the problem.

Obviously nothing is better than completely bleeding the clutch line, but the syringe type turkey baster worked well. You just need to leave some fluid in there so that you don't get air bubbles.

As always, YMMV and do some research before trusting some random poster like myself.
