Default 2.5 head swap onto 2.2 in 97 outback sport

I've got a 97 outback sport with the 2.2 (stock) and I've been trying to think of anything to do to get more power without doing a swap or a turbo kit or anything as my budget is limited as is my knowledge. Would swapping on 2.5 heads give a bit more power? The motors in the 2.5RS's are pretty much the same block with different heads right? If so how much would this cost me? How difficult is the labor? Thanks!

Here's a head/block chart for you:
http://www.b4et.com/docs/cr_matrix.pdf

AFAIK, you have a EJ22E with a 9.7:1 CR. Doesn't seem like you have a lot of head options...

if your assumption is correct, according to that chart it appears as though my motor only has one head option, which I assume would be the heads that came on it?

how about doing a lighter-weight flywheel and better-than-oem clutch, would that give me more accleration? I think my clutch is slipping so I probably have to do a clutch in the future anyway.

lightweight flywheel and pulleys will definitely help with acceleration, but you'll also notice that your car will slow down more on hills unless you get into the throttle more.

How limited is your budget? Do you plan on doing the work yourself?

While the 2.5l heads will increase your ability to breath, it will steal away more than a point of compression. Only if you were going to turbo or supercharge your engine would I change to 2.5l heads. And then the only option would be DOHC Ej25D heads from 1996-1999(only on certain models in 1999).

You are better off getting a set of Delta cams and some headers. Also, look down the page a couple of threads to the High Compression Frankenstein thread. Cheap power on the Ej22e comes from changing to the 2.5l block, not the 2.5l heads...

Its pretty limited, I don't have much money to spend but would like to be able to get at least a respectable amount of power without making drastic changes. I probably won't do the work myself, I have a buddy who works at a garage with a guy who knows a lot about Subaru's so I'd probably take it there.

How much do these delta cams run? Looks like Borla makes a set of headers for a little over $300.

Whoa. Not only are you still around, but you're a mod too? When did that happen?

Afredo,

Delta cams are less than $200 last time I checked. They will want your core cams back once you install theirs.

How difficult is a cam installation? Do I have to replace the lifters or valves? Will I have to get a reflash for the computer to recalibrate for the new cams? Got any links for where to get these? Thanks!

Just google Delta Camshaft. I think they are also a site sponsor.

Installation isn't much more difficult than doing the timing belt. You do have to remove and reinstall the rocker arms. Doesn't change the valves. Doesn't require any changes to the ECU.
