Default Protuned 04 AT WRX wagon dyno'd only 160 WHP?!?!?!

Hey All,

I was hoping to get some input from the community on my Ladies WRX wagon (automatic) that just went stage 2.

So I installed the Invidia Cattless Downpipe and flashed to stage 2 ACN91 Octane map on the AP.

The car was overboosting with about 60% throttle in the first 3 gears at about 3000 RPM. I could try to keep the car between 16 PSI and 18 PSI but it was pretty hard.

So in the sake of just getting the car safe for a DD while I switch focus from power to audio and appearance, I sprung for a Protune at DB Tuned in Roseville.

When I picked the car up after the tune, the Mustang Dyno chart that Paul gave to me showed 160 WHP and 190 Torque...

I was slightly surprised to say the least. I asked for a safe tune as it is my ladies DD, but I thought that even with a safe tune I would be close to 200 whp.

Paul said that the Automatic tranny is the reason for such low numbers. I guess I am then wondering what everyone else needed to do to their AT wrx's to get them over 200 WHP.

I dont have the dyno chart at the moment because I am up in Portland but I will upload it tomorrow as soon as I get home.

Im looking for any insight that you guys might have for me.

Mod List:

STI catless uppipe
Invidia Catless Downpipe (mechanical Cel fix)
Perrin Lightweight crank pulley
Perrin AFTA-Mas intake tube
Perrin Intercooler tubing
K and N drop-in
Flex Innovations grounding kit
Forester 110 Amp alternator
X2 AGM Battery (Batteries Plus brand of Northstar batteries)

Am I just being unrealistic with expecting to be close to 200whp with the mods listed and a protune? Also, it looks like I have only been able to hit about 14.5 PSI since the tune... I have driven about 850 miles since the tune was done on Wednesday.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments.

Def seems low for stage 2 but boost is only 1psi over stock so that might also be the prob; low boost, *****ty timing

Sounds about right given the car used, mod list, and type of dyno.
Just FYI: half the "mods" you listed don't really do anything at all to help your power.

So then what would I need in order to get at or above 200 whp? Bigger snail with pinks and a fuel pump? I figured that would put me at around 225-235?!?!

How much power do you think is reasonable if boost wasnt capped at 14.5?

@Vladi, I am aware that the uppipe, downpipe are really the only things that will increase power... but I just listed anything that was engine related that was different from stock.

Automatics skew dyno numbers and +1 of what was said above me.

Lack of mods, transmission, octane, geographical location, and tuner = sounds right to me. There are similar dyno number's to yours (albeit those were stock automatic WRX's) in this section.

200whp is about right for a catless 5MT protuned 2.0L with stock turbo. Automatic will be slower but I'm not sure how much, you don't see them often. 160 is low, sounds like a really safe tune (a stock 2.0 wrx 5MT will make that). If you want a true 225-235whp on the dynos in the bay (DB, GST, EQ) you will need a vf39 turbo, sti fuel injectors, sti intercooler and fuel pump and custom tune. I would recommend EQ tuning but everyone has their favorites.

Did paul (or you) get the over boosting issue fixed? How are you reading boost in the car? Have you tried data logging?

Not really surprising numbers given the gas, type of dyno, weather, boost and transmission. 160whp is stock wrx power but low numbers are to be expected with an auto. I wouldn't worry too much as long as the car runs fine and feels quicker than stock.

200whp is possible. I made a little over that with just a catless TBE, OTS cobb map and TC lock up. The latter probably helped the most.

FYI, we usually see 160whp on a stock 2.0 5MT and about 150 on the 4EAT. Stage 2 usually does about 215 on the 5MT and about 200-205 on the 4EAT.

How does the car feel compared to stock? Was any baseline pull done?

the way he stated it above, is he put the mods on, the cobb map or whatever (was overboosting) then took it to get pro-tuned (& im sure that guy must have fixed that issue because he didnt see any higher then 14.5psi after that)

meaning, no baseline #'s, never saw the dyno before the mods

You won't exceed 15 psi on the factory boost control system on an 02-5 WRX. With a smaller pill, different EBCS, or an MBC you can run more. Turbo life will suffer noticeably.

I'm very surprised that you see such a small difference between 5MT and Auto cars when stock. We've seen a much larger difference. Tranny fluid temperature and wear on the internal components of the auto trans. have caused a wide range from one auto car to the next as well.

For what it's worth the OP's numbers would be very low for a 5MT with those mods on our dyno and rather high for a 4EAT (which he has) on our dyno.

I've hit 17ish psi when I was stage 2 catless with the stock solenoid?

Did he lock the car into 3rd gear for the pull?

I am not after MAX power with a 146k engine...

I am not disappointed with the results at all... the car is pretty snappy and quick. I was just surprised to see the numbers so low.

It makes me wonder what I would be at with a 16G, sti pinks, mid-pipe and axleback... I mean would I ever really be looking at anything more than 200 whp?

I personally don't see any problems...given its an auto and tuned for only 14.5 psi and set for 10.5 afr under load on a mustang dyno its just a conservative tune. If its smooth, and feels good to you then I wouldn't worry about the numbers much.

When I had my 02, the OTS stage 2 map (93oct) would push 18psi.

160whp on an EJ20 is by no means pushing any limits even at 146k miles. You say you're not disappointed but you started this thread due to doubts so you can't be that happy either. I don't blame you, I would not be happy with 160whp either but I'm a little more willing to push things

Obviously a torque converter would not increase the power the engine is making, but would it increase the power it's putting down? (No experience with modded automatic transmissions...) That might be worth doing a little research on before bolting on a larger turbo.

Would the stock exhaust(except up/dp) have anything to do with it? Anyone?
