Question Anyone in Costa Rica?

I have a couple questions as far as registration laws go, in addition to shop laws. If anyone can give me at least a web address to find this information, that would be awesome! I won't be moving for another year, but will be checking things out in April of next year. What would it take to bring my car down (costs, protocol)? Also, in lovely california we have to deal with BAR, the EPA, etc. What is the costa rican version of those agencies? Thanks for any help I can get!

Heather

PS. This was my first stop as far as research goes. Gonna try and google it next.

That website is their "calculator" to evaluate how much a car is worth and based on that they will charge you something like a 60% tax on your vehicles value. It is ran by El Ministerio De Hacienda de Costa Rica.

You are able to ship your car down and get a tourists permit and drive your car for up to 3 months without having to pay the taxes right away. Once that time period is over you will have to pay that tax and take it to a place called Riteve for inspection. http://www.rtv.co.cr/

Hope you speak spanish because the websites are in espanol

Also as if 60% inscription tax was not enough, you also have to pay a "marchamo" yearly, it is a tax which is based on your car's value. As an example, I have a 2006 FourRunner Diesel down there and I have to pay $1,000 a year .

Their whole thing is they have a high tax on vehicles but housing is ridiculously affordable.

CR is a beautiful country, hope all your plans turn out great!

I am Jersey now but if you tell me where in Cali you are I might be able to get you a number to call for a company that does a lot of moving business to Costa Rica, I am sure they would be able to help you out.
