Default Kia GT concept - leaked pics

Quote:
Leaked pictures have emerged of the Kia concept car that will be unveiled at next week's Frankfurt motor show.

The dramatic rear-drive saloon, which the unofficial images suggest will be named the GT, will be the first in a series of new concepts that Kia will use to explore new market segments and prove its capabilities of building style-led models above its current range of traditional hatchbacks, saloons and crossovers.

Official details of the four-door concept are scarce, and Kia hasn't officially released any fresh information or images, but Autocar understands it be based on sister firm Hyundai’s Genesis saloon, with a powerful V8 petrol engine featuring under the bonnet.

See updated pictures of the Kia GT concept
The concept, believed to have been designed in Kia’s Frankfurt design studio, provides a striking message about Kia’s future expansion plans and will provide the blueprint for the firm’s new design direction under chief designer Peter Schreyer.

“I believe this car is a strong statement from Kia,” says Schreyer, formerly of Audi. “We are ready to fast forward to an all new chapter.”

The muscular concept features a bold, purposeful front-end with Kia’s new familiar ‘Schreyer grille’. It gets a gently sloping roofline, heavily sculpted sides and a sleek design for the rear lights.

Schreyer believes his concept is “roaring with energy and ready for take-off” from all perspectives. The interior, which is barely visible in the pictures, is said by Kia to be “a sophisticated and elegant four-seat cockpit”.

The Korean firm insists the concept is more a statement of intent rather than a preview of a new model in a German-dominated market segment never before occupied by Kia.

The saloon concept will be followed up by a drop-top version of the Soul aimed at the US market and a small front-drive roadster, based on Cee’d mechanicals. These concepts are expected to be launched at the Detroit and Geneva 2012 motor shows respectively.

“We have made good progress recently,” Kia’s vice chairman and CEO, Hank Lee, told Autocar last month. “But it is now important for us to improve our brand power. Concepts like these will help a lot with that. But we are prepared to take our time. We will test plenty of ideas before we make any decisions about production.”

Other new Kias on display at Frankfurt will be a three-door Rio and a facelift for the Soul.

Even if it softens after the concept car stage that is definitely a good start.

Lambo/Audi/FT-86/Aston Martin One-77/Panamara had some sexy time and this came out.

Not bad for a Kia...I kinda like it

Maybe something similar. The top-tier Optima wheels are pretty obscure.

Seriously? You drive a WRX, you don't get to have an opinion on the aesthetic quality of a car.

Nope. Only you have the keen eye for the aesthetic faux pas this car is. The rest of us plebs are so uncouth that we find this apparently vulgar lump of metal to be stunning.

It doesn't do it for me, either. Fish mouth, absurdly small greenhouse, and "face lifted" anti-gravity tail just hanging out there in space...

We learned that the conceptual study will be motivated by a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 delivering a little under 400-horsepower and close to 400 lb-ft of torque, with power channeled to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Perhaps more interesting is the fact that some people over at Kia are very keen on taking the concept to the next level and using it as a base to build a similar in philosophy production model

I keep seeing a new Hyundai Genesis sedan and a few Kia's and I have to admit they're pretty damn nice looking. Before my Subaru I owned a 2001 Santa Fe with 170k and still going strong. I Most likely won't own one ever again (except the Genesis coupe which is sexy!!) hopefully they keep up with excellent styling!

If they had balls they'd make a version with the 274hp DI motor, manual tranny and keep it under 3350lbs.

They'd be able to sell to at least 9 others.

kia and hyundai are both silly. they should really create higher tier brands for their upper class cars. people just can't get past the badging and buy a kia or a hyundai.

I like the seats - space efficient. I'm curious as to whether or not they have a plan for producing something like this with the necessary adjustments. Overall nice concept, but I'd have to guess that a production version would be very dissimilar.
