question for you guys on an issue with my car.. or i guess more of an assurance thing more than anything.. for the last little while i have been having some belt squeak, and it seems to be getting progressively louder, and as of late has been starting to make a bad noise when shutting the car off.. hoping for just a serpentine issue, which im thinking it is.. again looking for some assurance that thats all it is.. i am coming up on 90k, and will prob have the timing kit done, but if its just a serp then the timing kit i can just have done soonish, vs something i have to get done NOW!
video of the shiz.. |

That sounds little more than just belt squeek. Tensior or maybe ac pulley locking up. Hard to tell from the video. Have you tryed to piss it off with belt dressing? Sometime that works plus then you will know if its the belt or something binding. If you dont figure it out i might have some free tikme today.
Edit: watched it on computer instead of phone. Still hard to tell but sounds like something binding causing a squeaky belt. Last edited by turbodanny; 02-28-2012 at 03:47 PM. |

Depends what it is, you will have to do proccess of elimination. First take a candle if you dont have belt dressing while its running and put the candle on the belt in one spot for a bit so that it rubs all over it and see if the noise goes away. could be something simple from belt tension to bearings but typically by eliminating the squeak you can get a better idea if anything else is making unusual noise or that noise when you turn it off.

If it ends up being the plastic tensioner to the ac compressor. I have an extra you can have. I've heard of these going out.

seeing as the sound seems like it came from the ac side I'm guessing that pulley is going bad. A simple way of finding out for sure is to pull the belt off the ac pulley and see if it goes away or not. Mine did the same thing so I just ditched the belt all together. My ac didn't work anyways

Time for exhaust! There are a million catted vs catless DP threads but i want to hear from local people i trust with their opinions on which they like more or if they wish they have gone a different route. Both have their obvious gains, i have no plans for anything past "stage 2 ish" and im not concerned about the small lack of HP gains from a catted more so the smell and noise from a catless. Im looking to go catless so far but i want something tolerable for driving around as a DD so my plans were invidia Q300 TBE and DP.

Do you have a sound clip of your exhaust. I like the way the Greddy SE looks. I had an greddy on my acura previously and it had the perfect tone and not loud unless you wanted it to be.

I've got a Cobb catted dp and AMS catback (stock looking). It is subdued, but opens up nicely.

Speaking of the Cobb DP. why does it taper to 2.5"? but their stage 2 notes say you need a full TBE. I've been meaning to email Cobb and ask if their DP mated with a stock wrx midpipe (2.5") and an sti axel back(2.5" vs wrx 2.25") would be sufficient. for the longest time i thought their DP was full 3"...

Yeah exactly, the invidia Q300 isnt obnoxious nor very loud friom what ive read and listened to and its a bit cheaper than most TBE. I guess im going cattless and save some money and if it smells too bad or its too loud i will just sell or trade for a catted DP. Some people say they smell nothing and others complain so i wasnt sure what to believe, anyone? catted dp vs catless as far as noise isnt a large difference either, im slowly pulling the trigger..

I have a catless down pipe and it's a bit louder then stock but i dont smell anything inside, only outside. Personally I don't mind the smell, reminds me of grandpas old 67 Chevy haha.
