That one is a pita. Try a new gas cap first. Go from there.

Have you done anything around the purge valve recently (inbetween the runners on the passenger side of the intake mani)?

If so we had this on my buddies 02. He barely touched the purge valve, and it snapped one of the little fittings off, and that was the source of the leak. They seem to get really brittle from heatsoak, and if you touch them they basically fall apart.

Id recommend trying the gas cap first, and if that isnt it, return it, and try a new purge control solenoid. Make sure to check all the lines and fittings as well.

I got the same issue. Driving with cruise control on down highway. The CC shuts off and
I get a CEL, cruise control flashing, p0442 code. Gas cap didn't change it, I wonder wtf is up.

Gas cap and evap hoses are an easy place to start...

If that doesn't work, I finally fixed this code on my 06 WRX with a new gasket for the fuel pump assembly. I installed a Walbro pump and drove for months with no CEL but apparently it developed a small leak after a while.

Just had this same thing happen as well the other day. I wasn't using CC, and I was slowing down to get off a highway when the CC light starts blinking and Check Engine comes on. I read the code, reseated the gas cap, reset the ECU, and it hasn't come back in a couple days. Never had this before and hopefully it stays away.

I recently got this code too, same thing happened with the cruise control shutting off. Then the cruise light flashing with CEL on. I was still under warranty so I took it to the dealer. Turns out it was some kind of tubes inside the gas tank that broke off and had to be replaced. Cost was somewhere around 800$ if I wasn't under warranty. All labor though, part was around 80$ I think. I dont have the receipt with me right now so I can't say for sure the price or name of the part.

Finally got this issue fixed. I reset the code but it kept coming back ~100 miles into a new tank of gas. So I tried the new fuel cap fix but it still came back. I got a smoke test done on the evap system and found a hose not connected.

If you follow the hose (on the bottom of the circular object in the 1st pic) you will find it connects to a blue nipple (2nd pic)- this was not attached. We reattached it and the code has not come back since.

I had this same problem on my 2004 wrx. But the black hose from the round cap thing would not reach the blue nipple. I got 2 inches of vacuum tube and a connector and hooked it up. Now I get a faint smell of fuel in the cabin on start up. It fixed the cel though. Could i have hooked up the wrong hose if the loose hose was way too short? Could this be causing the gas smell?

If you live in a salt state... Check your fuel filler neck assembly.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have the same problem +1. Riddle me this: Whenever I put gas in my '05 STi (doesn't matter how much), the car doesn't want to start afterward. It takes several cranks and then it will stall out a couple times before it will keep running. I only just got the car, and as far as I know it's stock. Any ideas? THanks!

Check the purge canister and the relief valves in the tank...if you ever filled up and the pump clicked, then you held it again, and again...you can ruin that canister and the valves can get damaged.

Had that happen once with a client and manoman was that a pain to go through. Tank was dropped and almost everything was replaced THEN the car was great...but he also had an issue with his brothers car (he did the same thing) where the fuel pump sending unit was getting faulted anytime the leveler would move UP (and only up)...there is absolutely no reason for that but hey, a new carrier fixed it.

Had this happen to me last week... brought it up to the dealer and they said there was no leak found. They re-seated the gas cap o-ring and cleared the code... Next week and two fill ups later it comes back, so back it goes hopefully they fix it this time

I'm having this issue right now but I thought this might be an 02 sensor issue. I'll have to try the gas cap and check for leaks 1st to see if that will resolve the problem.

P044x codes don't have a single thing to do with O2 sensors.

i had a local tuner shop install a boost gauge and he put the vacuum line in between the evap diaphragm and the intake manifold.....caused a evap CEL and low boost (6-8psi), he then cleared it with his own scanner but it still reads low boost on AP, so far ive disconnected vacuum line and reconnected stock line OEM way, hard resetted ecu, reflashed stage 2 map, checked hoses on the blue t-fitting to make sure connected but still low boost with no CEL....not sure what to do next....HELP

Default Gas Cap

Had a P0442 come on months ago. I tightened the gas cap, inspected all of the evap lines, purge valves, charcoal canister, but couldn't find the leak. I decided to just supress the code with the AP.

Everything was swell for a few months, but then I started getting a Misfire in Cylinder 1 after hot starts (cold starts were nice and smooth). I checked compression, changed plugs, moved coil packs, moved injectors but could not figure out the problem.

I finally decided on a whim to replace the gas cap, and now everthing is great. No P0442 and no Misfire on Cylinder 1 after a hot start.

I'm guessing the small leak from the gas cap prevented the evap system from correctly purging/using the vapors in the charcoal canister, and since the the evap lines feed into the Cylinder 1 intake runner a misfire would happen in that cylinder due to a rich condition after a hot start (saw aggressive negative A/F Correction on a hot start).

Those purge valves suck. They snap if you look at them wrong. I ghetto fixed mine by epoxying a fitting into it

Those things don't just break looking at them, I'm sure many are split in two right now just thinking about them...they kamikaze your evap system for sure!

Also, DJ, with your issue regarding the vac lines and the way they were hooked up, why not have your tuner check them out because something happened there...not as simple as hooking up two lines (why T there?) and BAM, CEL's galore, mayeb he pinched something?
