Launched in the UK on April 1st 2012, Subaru AF Technology means you don't need to spend hours cleaning your new car any more, you can spend that time with your family and out doing things, things which make for...well a more interesting life at the click of a button.

Does the date "April 1st" carry any significance? What might the "AF" in "Subaru AF Technology" stand for?

I thought Subaru UK's April 1 video was a better effort than SOA's April 1 press release.

Pricing is always released shortly before the vehicles go on sale.

The Crosstrek is not going on sale until Fall. You're rushing things!

Truth. I don't blame them. haha This car has mad appeal. I'm curious about the color options. I would want to see something lighter than Dark Gray Metallic, but darker than Ice Silver.

I read somewhere it will be in the low 20's in Canada.

No need to be too anxious. Most car sites predict that it will be low 20k, which makes sense given the price of the outback. If you're seriously considering it, just think low 20k.

What I'm worried about and will dictate how fast i jump on one is how many get shipped. I dont want to deal with this 5k more then msrp thing thats going on with the brz. If that happens, I'll get one a year or maybe two after it hits dealers.

The same can already be said about the regular Impreza. A CVT equipped Outback starts at $25,380, and you can easily get an Impreza Sport Limited past that.

Subaru already announced the color choices when they introduced it at the NY Auto Show on April 4. Goto http://www.subaru.com/xv-crosstrek/2013/index.html and click on "Color" near the upper right.

So why are people thinking that there will be price markups on the XV?

Perhaps more appropriate to compare Crosstrek's pricing with Forester's than Outback's. I think there's more risk of cannibalization there, too.

That has been what I read on trim levels.


That is why I passed on the limited impreza it had an MSRP more than I paid for my wife's limited 2010 outback and I know that is a much nicer car in terms of room and ride comfort.

Why does raising the chasis 4 inches decrease mpg by 10%?

Increased aerodynamic drag from the suspension and other parts of the undercarriage. Also, the XV has more aggressive wheel arches which further adds to the aerodynamic drag.

Weight has very little impact on highway fuel economy. It accounts for something like 15% of the total drag at 70 mph. So, upping the weight a couple hundred pounds only increases rolling resistance drag by <10% (thus total drag by less than 1.5%). Aero, on the other hand, has a pretty big role on the highway. That is the most likely culprit, as mentioned above.

To sum up and editorialize on the last few replies, here's why I think the XV gets 10% worse mileage than the Impreza:

• Wider, and slightly more aggressive tires = higher rolling resistance. This is probably the #1 contributor to the difference.
  • Impreza Sport: Yokohama Avid S34 205/50R 17
  • XV Crosstrek: Yokohama Geolander H/T G95 225/55R 17
• Taller height = less aerodynamic. (Yes, I realize it's the same size body just jacked up, but it's still less aerodynamic than hugging the ground. Think about stock cars.)
• I agree that the body cladding and wheel arches may also decrease drag, but probably not much. That said, while U.S. specs aren't released yet, comparing the Australian XV to the Impreza, the XV is more than an inch wider, presumably due to the cladding. So extra drag from cladding is very likely a (small) contributor to the lower mileage.

I really doubt that the CVT has different "gearing", as it is extremely unlikely Subaru is dropping a different CVT into the XV with a different ratio spread, on the same production line.

But it is possible and still undetermined if perhaps Subaru tweaked the CVT programming to maintain similar acceleration despite slightly heavier weight (<100 pounds) by biasing the programming towards more torquey RPM's instead of maximum efficiency. I recall reading this is what Toyota did with the Prius V compared to the Prius to keep 0-60 times similar despite heavier weight.
