Default Help! What's wrong with my car

My girlfriend has a '99 OBS. She bought it used three weeks ago. This morning she went out to her car and started it, it ran for two or three seconds and then died. Then, each time she would start it, it would run for a couple seconds and then die. It did this about 20 times in a row before we gave up.

I called the dealership we bought it from to see if the recalled MAF had been done and he said it hadn't (that a story in itself because the jack@$$ used car salesman we dealt with told me it had at the time of purchase).

I have to decide if I'm going to tow it all the way to the dealership we bought it from (a long ways from my house) or take it to the near dealership where the tow is much closer and cheaper. They agreed that if I take it to either one and they discover the problem is the MAF, they will pay for the towing and the repair. But, if they discover the problem is something other than the MAF they will not pay for the towing.

So, I have to decide what the odds are that the problem is the MAF. Please help

Unhappy check the obvious?

Sorry to hear that your gf's car may be a lemon.

If I were you, I'd check some simple things, like the battery - is the battery working? Enough juice? What about any fuses - maybe the fuse to the fuel pump has died.

If it were a MAF problem, the car would run, but in limp-home mode - revs max out at 3k, CE light, etc.

LaterZ!
Darren!!

had a similar problem after i took my intake silencer off. Check hoses that come off the air intake assembly and go to the motor. There was one about 2" wide insulated tube that had come off when i was wiggling the airbox around. make sure its attached

Okay it is not the battery. If you can start it for 20 minutes the battery is fine.

The MAF will just cause a nasty running engine (or the limp mode of above). I am pretty sure that you can still start it. Try to unplug the MAF and see if it gets any better. If it does than the MAF is broke. If it doesn't do anything. I might look somewhere else.

I would also look at the crank/camshalt position sensor as a cause of this too.

The fuel pressure could cause this as well. If for some reason the fual pump could only prime the system but not keep up with demand, than your engine would stop after a few seconds. Those parts my be the fuel filter (allows a little but not a lot), a fuel pump, or a pressure regulator.

Any way you look at it, I would take it a get the trouble codes pulled and the electrical tested.

Good luck.

Tim

Also look for a bad vacuum leak. A good way to check is if the engine will run with a some gas peddle but not run at idle.

aka gnildronde

Thanks for all the help. I brought it to the dealership where she bought it. They did the MAF replacement and it runs just fine now. I don't know why?

I wasn't able to try anything because I was at work and she wouldn't know the difference between a radiator and an intercooler.

The first thing I though was a disconnected MAF. I never tried running my legacy this way but my supra would run for three seconds then die when the map was disconnected.
