+1 on this! I would cut them off then proceed to slow down (only if traffic is sparse) till they get the idea and move over.

I don't understand why no one else uses the lane during HOV off hours. This lane is usually WIDE open.

I'm a coffee grind.

I left 10 minutes earlier today and noticed a huge decrease in the amount of rampant douchebaggery that I usually see. Lovely. So if I leave an hour early, everyone should still be sleeping.

There are always douchy drivers around military bases. I know that there are a lot of posts in the area, but there are a lot more douches in the Colorado Springs area. With the 5 military installations there, there are over 50,000 military members.

I use HR HOV lanes after hours. There isnt a sign against it after hours. Its not posted "hey stay out!" I pay enough taxes to warrant its use when attending concerts in Norfolk!!

HOV help some, but it's the funnels to the tunnels and to bases that seem to be the worst. Expected though with the amount of commuters that go to work.

Now the Summer vacationers that clog up the 64 tunnel piss me off!

I take the HOV lanes whenever they are open. For the main reason that there is less potholes, the lane is smoother, less highway speedbumps. I also have the common decency to move over if someone is coming up behind me. I can't wait til the winter when the roads get really bad.

HOV lane is great. The road surface is awesome. The only downside are idiots that like to brake check in it. I've seen a few accidents in the eastbound I64 HOV and every time it's been ugly.

You would think in a coastal area, the highways would have better drainage. Seriously, it is like they designed these roads to become rivers when the rain gets a little heavy. Especially the HOV on 64.

That said, I am one of those jerks that will use the HOV lanes (the far left ones, not the separated ones) even though I have nobody in my car. Sure, it is illegal and all, but nobody seems to car pool anyway. If I get pulled over, so be it, but the cops seem to only care about the separate HOV lanes. *shrug*

So you're just contributing to the crappy driving. Doing all that just makes it worse. People suck at driving. If you just chill and deal with it, there would actually be LESS of a problem. Aggressive d-bag driving like you describe is just as bad, if not worse, than the ignorant a-holes.

State troopers can blow me. I think it is funny how the speed limit in VA is often 60+ on every road OUTSIDE of HR, leading me to think that they don't raise it because it nets a profit. People will cruise at 70 no matter what, so the only reason to NOT raise the limit is because +15 nets more money than +5. Hell, +5 wouldn't even warrant a ticket.

News flash morons, when it isn't HOV hours, the far left lane is not the HOV lane anymore. MOVE! Watch your clock and rear view. It is 0801? GTFO of the left ASAP.

When someone DOES allow you in, give the normal "wave" of thanks. Don't and I will probably call you an ******* and might cut you out for being a dick.

The worst part? I am being stationed in DC after this. FUUUUUUUU.......

Speaking from experience, aggression here does nothing but potentially cost the aggressor $. After two years of living here, I just drive. It's fun to sit back and watch the asshattery unfold before me as long as I'm at a safe enough distance to stop and not be involved. THIS is why I've started filming my commute. I figured, wtf, the phone is in the car. I have a mount. Might as well use it for ****s and giggles.

How many NoVa people have actually driven here on a regular basis and have done so currently, not 10 years ago? I'm just curious and not looking to pick a fight. First job offer with decent pay I get that is out of here, I'm gone. I am dreading any DC traffic, though. You just sit and sit some more then move 4 feet and sit longer, tick tock tick tock, sit then slowly go.

This. I just sit back, try to relax, and enjoy knowing I'm a better driver than all the people around me.

Meh, I disagree to a point. Sure some of it is a tad juvenile in nature, but if everyone just ignores the problems, they don't go away. I sometimes think people don't even realize that they are violating the "rules of the road", sometimes a little "wake up" is what they need.

I never actually used to drive aggressively until I moved here. I quickly found out that if you leave one car length or more between you and guy in front of you, people WILL fit their car in there. Sorry but I am not going to sit back and let everyone cut me out.

Furthermore, lets talk about entrance and exit ramps. When merging onto the highway, YOU have to yield to the traffic already on the highway. Common courtesy suggests two things; one being that if possible, you can move over to allow people to safely merge. Two is that in heavy traffic, people should utilize the "zipper" style of merging. If someone who has to yield decides that they don't want to and that they are going to run up as far as they can before cutting someone out, well it won't be me, have fun riding on the shoulder. Am I compounding it? Perhaps, but I don't think I am wrong, they are because they are more important than everyone else.

As for exit ramps, lets be real here. People driving around here go to the same places every day, they know where their exits are. So if I am in line, lets say at the ramp getting onto 64 (towards Norfolk) off of 264W, and I see these people who try and fly up as far as they can before cutting over at the last minute, I will "close the gap". Most of the time there is little to no traffic behind me, why am I the douche when they should have slowed down and merged.

As for me being a douche for using the far left HOV lanes (I know you didn't say it), meh.....it is a risk I take, if I get caught, you won't see a thread on here from me complaining that I got a ticket. *shrug*

Attention America, it is called a turn signal, use them.

Facts of truth about Hampton Roads and part of why I'm filming my commute:

Absolutely true.

This has caused me to ride way closer to the car in front of me than I'm comfortable doing. I drive to NJ and PA, I have to remind myself that this is no longer necessary and everywhere outside of HR it's considered tailgating and NJ drivers will brake check you because it's not a no fault when you rearend them.

You forgot that they slam on their brakes once they cut you off.

I saw this a lot in Italy and when I see it here I think, "they must've been stationed in Italy and haven't gotten used to the fact that we don't do this here."

For the love of GOD, I cannot figure out why no one uses those here? In NJ you get pulled over for not using it.

I'm going to add another check to this one. Cops. I love cops. I really do. Call me a nutswinger all you want but I come from an area were we respect our cops. Most of us have one in the family or a family friend who is on. That being said, people here freak the F out when they see a cop. VA State Police are predictable. You know where they're going to be you know to slow down to about 60 (if you're speeding) before you get there and yet, you still have these idiots slamming on their brakes the moment they see one and going BELOW the speedlimit. Going below the speedlimit will get you pulled over in most states. Braking hard (think Indian River through Greenbrier on this one) in some areas is an invite for a potentially serious multi vehicle accident.

oh and if the State Patrol is sitting in the enclosed HOV lane with his lights on there is NO REASON FOR YOU TO BRAKE ON THE MAIN HIGHWAY.

Here is a bit more advice for HR drivers:

1) Your minivan is not a sports car therefore, do not drive it as such. If you really cared about your 5 kids (judging by your stickfigure family on the rear windscreen) you'd detach the cellphone from your head, pull your head out of your ass and drive like you might possibly have one ounce of common sense in your body.

2) Your minivan is not a 50cc scooter either. Doing 50mph in the middle or passing lane is endangering your 5 stick figure kids , 2 stick figure cats, and 1 stick figure dog more than doing 55mph in the slow lanes will

3) The S in SUV does not mean sports car. Sport Utility Vehicle was once reserved for those trucks and vehicles that people used solely for offroading fun not drag racing, highspeed autocross, NASCAR, or chrome wheel having Fast and the Furious recreations.

4) There are signs in the tunnels that say Maintain Speed. Right under those you will see signs that say 55 MPH. Hmmmm coincidence? I think not. 35 and braking when water droplets plop on your windscreen is not how you navigate the tunnel.

5) Left lane= used for passing slow pokes, right lanes= used by slow pokes. If you are a slowpoke in the left lane, MOVE! No where in the driving test you supposedly took to get a license does it say, "They can go around me..."

6) Ladies, put your make up on at home. The lighting there is better anyway.

7) No one on this planet is a good driver with a cellphone held up to their head. Get a bluetooth headset or get handsfree or shut up and drive.

8) Pass the freaking 18 wheeler already! You're pissing him off too with your scaredy cat braking and hesitation

Ha ha ha, good list!

Regarding turn signals, just because you have one on doesn't mean people HAVE to let you in. People around here seem to think so. They will put it on, usually at the last second, and try to squeeze in front of you. Funny thing to me is, most of the time, there are no cars behind me in that lane, so slow down and merge, don't keep speeding up just to get in front of me.

And for those folks who like to pull out of driveways/entrances, WAIT! I can't stand it when I am coming down the road and people just pull out because they don't want to wait for the traffic to pass. If you are going to do that, at least step on the gas, but noooooo, they pull out and cause everyone to stomp on the brakes.

I kind of wish cops would enforce turn signal violations as much as they do dark tint.

For comic relief, here is what is illegal to perform while in operation of a motor vehicle in the great communistwealth:

http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...08000000000000

No coasting.

A couple of the tunnels here and the 264 exit from 64 has double solid white lines. I don't remember exactly where I read it, but in one of those areas there is a sign posted that said crossing a double solid white line is illegal. I wish I remembered where I saw that now. But looking in the book at the pavement markings they don't talk about it in there.

There are more than 5 military installations here.....plus the shipyards (someone correct me if I am wrong, 2? )

I have never seen such poorly managed road upkeep in my life. The drainage, the potholes, the potholes in the filled potholes......64 might as well have been cobblestone. ****, the roads in Alaska were better than here and they see snow removal equipment in the winter and gravel and rocks (it is too cold to use salt on the road in the winter.....so they have to use rocks......great for a paintjob).

My husband got a ticket for briefly entering the HOV lane to avoid an accident from someone abruptly changing lanes and not paying attention.

This happens to me at least once a day....usually on Magruder. 9 times out of 10 when I look behind me there is no one else coming and that is what really pisses me off.....like you can't wait the extra 3 seconds for me to pass.....you must pull out and then proceed to go slow.

A guy that I work with was riding his motorcycle back to work from lunch when a Newport News cop didn't bother looking, didn't have her lights on, didn't use her turn signal made an illegal uturn from the right lane and turned into him and threw him off his bike. When he was in the hospital the cops were asking him questions.....they asked how fast were you going he said about 45. They said he was at fault because he forfetited his right of way by going 45 in a 40. Needless to say he has a case and has been trying to fight it for the last year and a half.

There is written law in VA but it seems there is an unwritten law that states guilty by convenience or general dislike.

Does he really have a case? I'm not saying that to be facetious, I'm rooting for him. Like, is it a matter of his lawyer going, "Wait a minute there have been countless precedents disregarding 45 in a 40 when..." Or, maybe because they questioned him while on drugs in a hospital?

I remember an older thread like this, and everyone came to a conclusion of "Fine, make up the rules, but follow them." And then someone else pulled out the fine print that says in no uncertain terms, "unless you're in a police car."

I didn't mean I think he has "a case" as in I think he should fight it. He has a lawyer and has a court date.....but when you are fighting the city and not a person it becomes a little harder.

I don't know how it is going to turn out....I hope in his favor. If a cop happens to do the same thing same scenario but kills the man....you really think they will be like "well, he was going 5 over and according to the law....". I don't think so. Well, I lie....this is Virginia they probably would..lol.
