Question Radar Detector?

To those who use radar detectors. What is currently the best or the most decent detector in the market?

I use a Valentine One, and I think most will agree that's still the best out there.

Bel 980
Escort Passport 8500
Valentine 1

all just about equal in performance.

I own and use the 8500. I bought it for $250. It has saved my butt on several occasions.

I really recommend you do a search on this topic, its been brought up numerous times.

Search this forum, WRX non-tech forum, Newbie forum, and sound forum.... there have been discussions about radar detectors in each of those forums if I am not mistaken.

But while I am at it..... Valentine 1 has save my butt so many times.... its already saved me the amount I have paid for it.

I have had many others and they were good as well, but nothing beats the V1. I only wish I got it sooner. Knowing the direction the radar is comming from is more important than you think.

My vote is the V1.

I agree with UCI_SCOTT, the 3 he mentioned are pretty much equal as the pinnacles of performance. Do some research and pick the one that has the features you want. I choose the V1 also because it offers ALOT more information. But you have to know how to read it. Click the following for some very useful info. speedzones

Thanks for the comments. Looks like V1 is the weapon of choice for a good majority.

I'll definitely invest in a detector for cheap insurance when I drive the WRX.

Cool

I have a Cobra. Very happy with it, aside from the inadvertant laser warnings (from highway lane reflectors, of all things). Saved my butt many a time.

Yes, This subject has been discussed before. However, thechnology changes constantly. The Passprt 8500 is new. I have a 7500 and a month later they came out with the 8500. So doing a search may just give you old info.

I agree. The Passport or the V1. I have a gripe against BEL though. I have had three of them and they all stopped working in very short order. I am much happier with the Passport.

This is a good reason to get a V1. You can send it back to be upgraded when they come up with new countermeasures" I've had mine since 92' and I've sent it back 3 times to be retrofitted. Having the directional arrows alone is worth the money.

Radartest did a test pitting the V1, Bel 980, Passport 8500, and K40 against one another head-to-head. In the end, the rankings came in as follows:

Passport 8500 (97 points)
Bel 980 (94 points)
Valentine 1 (77 points)
K40 SS3000 (39 points)
The article/breakdown is quite interesting and informative, and I think based on this information I will be picking up a Passport here soon.

The Radartest referred to above is very biased. If you do a search you'll find comments on the guy who "conducted" the test. He has done consulting work for the companies that he ranked ahead of the V1. He has approached Mike Valentine a couple times looking for consulting work and has been refused. The results of his test seems to be his way of getting revenge. There is also a link somewhere where Mike Valentine explains point by point the fallacies in that test.
Anyway, while the top 3 may be very close in actual sensitivity and ability to detect radar, the fact that the V1 tells you where the radar is coming from makes it far more effective than the others in my opinion.
It is also very well made, having a strong magnesium body and is completely upgradable so it will not become obsolete in a few years.

You know, I've heard this as well, but there are other sites that put the 8500 on the same level as, if not better than, the V1. One such site it Speedzones . Also, a few people on Epinions have also put the 8500 above the V1. Just do a search at the site for "Passport 8500."

I use the Bel 890 and it works fine.

The V1 is very cool too, but I realized when I am speeding I don't care where the signal is coming from, nor do I have time to look at the little display - I look for the cops instead - I just want to hear the beep and slow down!

Valentine 1, it's the only on that I've seen work flawlessly. I have a V1, and my friends have a lot of the other ones. I'm the only one that's never been pulled over.

Default The Real FuzzBuster Test

OK Dudes:

Enough with the chit chat: Go this URL and you will find the truth about which Radar Detector is the best (newest technology):

http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleID=9090

Read the article; Here the rankings in a nut shell:

How We Ranked Them by Categories

Best overall performance = BEL Pro RX65
Best instant-on performance = Escort Passport 8500 X50
Best POP-mode performance = BEL Pro RX65
Best windshield mount = Valentine One
Best visual displays = BEL Pro RX65
Best audible alerts = Escort Passport 8500 X50
Best laser performance = Valentine One
Best price/performance ratio = Escort Passport 8500 X50

Also see this URL:

http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleID=1064

World's Best Radar Detector! 2003

Here's how they rated them:
1) Bel 980
2) Escort Passport 8500
3) K40 SS300
4) Valentine One

I have a Bell 970 LR that has proven many times it's ability. By far the best I have ever own, and I have own quite a few. Couple of friends just bought the Passport 8500 (also very effective) as I hear the BEL Pro RX55's and 65's are. The V1's are getting passed up, technology wise, unfortunely. Still the best for Laser, but how many police forces can afford them or have the time to sit out there with a Tripod mounted Laser and shoot your vehicle?

So i have a question, my friend has one or he used to and that damn thing would go off all the time. How are you supposed to know that the little noise it makes is warning you of a cop's radar or just a Walgreens or Pink'n'save door opening. His was really sensitive. Kind of confused. Also how do you know when to slow down. This is all a little confusing.

Help,
Zach

Umm considering the fact that back oh say I don't know 4 years ago when this thread was created the Valentine 1 was the best. Now not so much.
