Default Sf5 Ej20g Ecu / Gf8 Ej20g Ecu

Does anyone have first hand experience of using a 1997-1998 Forester SF5 EJ20G ECU on a 1997-1998 Impreza WRX Wagon or vice versa? In other words, can I use an SF5 EJ20G MT ECU on a GF8 EJ20G MT wiring loom?

I wouldn't be surprised if they are identical, they both should be 3 plug.

As far as I know I never confirmed that they were the same I could only guess they were. I've been looking for a 1997 WRX MT EJ20G Wagon ECU but am unable to find one, a Forester EJ20G MT ECU has popped up now... Hence the question.

I do have all the wiring diagrams for the WRX but not for the Forester...

i would image it would work just fine but would not be an identical part number. they probably have a slightly different map on them since the forester is bigger and heavier.

as a point of reference, I have successfully run a 99 Forester 5spd on a 99 2.5RS automatic ECU.

The ECU and wiring numbers indeed are different. I have now asked suppliers of aftermarket ECU's if I can run a WRX V3/4 ECU on 'my' JDM Forester EJ20G Wait and see...

Both ViPec and Link have responded. Both companies have 'second hand' information that a WRX ECU works on a Forester with EJ20G but also advise to check the pinout to make sure. Guess I will just have to try when I have the wiring harness ready.

No I have a martyrs harness for a usdm impreza and 96 gc8. Fuse boxes and battery cable and all. But I was thinking it may be easier to repin the ecu but way risky move.
