so i tried to install the roof overlay from premiumautostyling and it pretty much ended before even started. i cleaned the roof, lined up the overlay and taped it down. i started to peel the vinyl off the backing and found this...

i'm no vinly expert but i was under the impression the backing should be somewhat resistant to water? is this normal?

Completely normaly never get the paper wet on the back you will have this end result I have worked with the stuff for 4 years now. You can get the paper off the vinyl if this happened if you wet the part that is stuck to the vinyl still then you should be able to rub it off.

You prob wont get all the paper wax paper off using this method though.

doh, appreciate the response boost. i'll see what i can do about removing the paper from the vinyl, i only peeled back 1 corner so maybe the rest of the vinyl isn't ruined.

yeah, you wet the roof not the paper.

I started a section and kind of rolled the paper off as my friend pulled and pressed the vinyl down

yeah my mistake was wetting the roof then throwing the vinyl (with backing) on top to position

yah take if of bring it inside and let it dry out it should fix the problem if it came into contact with water anywhere else, once the backing paper dries out again it normally will just peal off

*For anyone looking to do this*

I bought this and tried to install it myself and failed horribly, that isn't to say you will also. You might have much better luck than i did.

So I called around to see how much it would cost to have it done by someone who knows what they are doing. Most everyone was too expensive. One guy I called said about $65 an hour and it could take 4 hours, not quite what I am looking to spend.

I went to "sign o rama" which should have plenty of locations around and quoted me at $190 with 3M vinyl included. He said it would be about $150 w/o the vinyl. Not to mention they had many choices like CF, White CF, metallic black and various other colors that cost more.

My point is, if you are not sure of yourself on installing this, shop around at some of the sign stores. You might save yourself some time and heartache.

Ouch!!! Yes, getting the backing paper wet will result in this. I did the same thing on my first attempt but was able to correct the issue.

If you decide to buy another now's the time to do it. 30% off all vinyl overlays

Good Luck!

I've done some camo vynil on my 2001 silverado pickup, the process was pretty painful, took me about 2-3 hours to cover one fender perfectly.

definitely worth payning somebody to do this if you dont have experience working with vynil.

I found a graphics shop that said they would install it for $100. I figured it was worth to spend a little extra and have it done right since I failed so badly the first time.
