Default Sti version 4 swap help

Hey guys, so I got this sti version 4 swap and its going under the hood of my 2001 2.5rs... So At this point I'm kinda stuck trying to decide how I'm going to setup the wiring and engine management system. The swap came with transmission, axles, front brakes/arms,differential, and ecu... I was told to use a complete ver. 4 harness and use the ecu it came with... idk i just want this thing running perfecto! I'd be cool to get some tips & pointers from the more experienced subaru'ers...

v4 wont pass emissions. you can do a full harness swap, but it will be cleaner with a proper merge. i did the harness twist(my term) and it works, but would be better wired into your cars existing harness. imo

verify your states requirements for oldr cars. this would tell you if its really worth the trouble of building this as a DD. if its a race car, go nuts! buut, if DD is in it's future, go for an OBDII compliant swap(or passable). some states require different tests, so this may factor in as well. im unfamiliar with WA state personally, maybe someone can chime in who's "in the know"?!

WA state "requires" emissions....I quote because not every county requires you to get an inspection. If you dont have to get an inspection then you can pretty much do what you would like... It'll just make it hard if you choose to sell it and its to someone who has to get it inspected. the loop-hole here is you can just register it in a county where you don't need an inspection...

98 RS and V4 are the closest cars from the different continents and therefore more easily swapped/merged. 01 shouldn't be much more work as it has elec heaters like the V4 and newer cars.

P.S. you can register a car in a place where you don't actually live. you know when you need plates(birthday), so who cares where they mail your reminder? just pick a legit addy in a place with no inspections and you don't need one.

What would be a good aftermarket ecu I don't want to run the stock ecu... i heard most of these engines blow up b/c of detonation due to that fact that they are use to Japanese fuel which is higher octane than the american fuel... the point is i just want it running perfect....

the stock ECU would be fine if you wanted to put some higher octane in. i ran 93 without issues for 2 years. others haven't been that lucky i guess.

aftermarket is an option(not for emissions), or another less aggressive JDM ECU. this is where most people stop seeing JDM swaps as a legit replacement. theres stuff out there, but not emissions friendly. i swapped into an older chassis(OBD1) and they can plug in, so i get a sniff test only. some states still sniff and have AWD roller tests(from what i hear). ohio isn't that way, so i went that route.

I guess I better find a Ej257 short block for back up in case anything happens but I already talked to a local tunner who says he can tune it with the stock ecu and pull timing so it doesn't need the higher octane gas...
