What Porsche? Are you talking about my VW??

This one is too nice to cut up and put a radiatior into. I am looking around for a solid 70 or 71 1.7 to put a 2.5RS motor into...

Hopefully I can get the whole car and not just the engine because if I bring one more car project into the house my wife is going to make me sleep in it

As to the '12s, the standard ones lack flair, and do look a bit like a Dodge Caliber, but our Sport has a different stance and look, done with paint, good roof rails, and a bit less squished ride height. I think this is just what Subaru wants, a standard looking standard car, and a little bit more sporty looking car (not counting the WRX/STI).

2. Performance - even with our CVT and during the breakin period, we have had no trouble keeping ahead of traffic, on surface street and merging on expressways. I used to have a '74 BMW 2002 tii that did 0-60 in 10 secs, and that was a boy-racer at the time. This car is a teeny bit faster... Do people call Miatas too slow? No. They are about as fast.
The current Miata has about 170 HP. The new Impreza 140.

The old Impreza had 170HP and does not perform as well the the 2012 model. The Impreza is not a Miata, so - what's your point?

The 2012 Impreza does what it was designed to do well.I wanted all wheel drive and good gas mileage, and got both.As far as being ugly,a lot of folks think the rear spoiler on an sti makes it look like a clown car.More horsepower, buy a wrx or sti.

I really don't get peoples views on this car who bash it. It's a BASE model car. It is by far the best base model car ever made by subaru. The car is made for fuel economy. The wrx and sti will obviously be more sporty looking for those that worry. This base model is built strictly for fuel economy. The audio system does a lot of nice things as well. Not to mention it's the most advanced impreza ever made as well.

Exactly! It's a great commuter car, you can get a leather interior, bluetooth, lots of nice features, it gets pretty good mileage and it's great for driving in the winter and it's pretty fun to drive. It's not meant to be a wrx or STi, subaru offers a WRX, STI, BRZ, LGT and FXT for those who want more power and styling.

I also find it crazy lot of the review seem to bash the car because it isn't a WRX. The current Impreza feels like a much better car for regular driving than the car it replaces, but everyone wants to talk about how it could use another 75 HP and stiffer suspension with sharper turn in Plus the last Impreza (base model) wasn't exactly a rocket or that comfortable, but people seem to mention it like it was a Mini when it comes to handling...

It's because most of the people who say that aren't intellegent.

Not sure did some one post it, but in Europe base model will be FWD as was announced at Geneva... So after couple years I think same thing will be in US...

Ugh I think that would be dreadful. Subaru has a niche and focusing on that niche has allowed them to prosper and grow quite nicely. If they start selling FWD cars that puts them right in the snake pit with all of the other automakers fighting for the same market space. Once you see AWD being an option on the cars, I am inclined to think Subaru's foothold in the snow-belt areas would drop drastically.

Read an online review of the 2012 Impreza.
http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/15/2...mpreza-review/

In the 13th paragraph, the reviewer indicated the AWD system in the manual equipped Imprezas uses the traditional Symmetrical variant while the CVT models uses an "active" setup where the front wheels do the majority of the work.

Does this help explain the higher MPG numbers in the CVT model? Why has Subaru gone this route and does this mean that all CVT models are inferior to its manual counterparts?

These front wheel biased setups are horrid and don't perform anywhere as well as Subaru's tried and true AWD systems. A perfect example of this is seen here-->

Had a CVT Impreza on order but maybe I may reconsider....
Cheers

I remember reading that review and we discussed how the guy got it wrong about the two AWD systems.

I drive a 5speed 2.0i and it does have symmetrical AWD 50/50 split due to the mechanical (non electronic) viscous coupling.

And it is true that the CVT, like ALL subarus with an automatic transmission including last years version of the Impreza, does not use a viscous coupling differential.

It has an electronically controlled clutch (the exact same system Subaru has been using for years in their automatic cars). It is, however, still a symmetrical AWD system, but instead of a constant 50/50 split it varies between (sources vary) 90/10 - 60/40.

However the electronic system used by Subaru is potentially superior to the viscous coupling because it can shift power faster than the viscous coupling system can. In fact, the video you put up showed a subaru with an automatic transmission using the very system you think isn't as good.

Last evidence -- go to the Subaru Outback forum and you will find a conversation about owners who had both set-ups comparing them, consensus there is that the electronic clutch system is better than the system found in the manual version for driving in slippery conditions.

I drove my 5speed in the snow and it is a tank and absolutely amazing. So either system will be fine.

I didn't want a CVT myself, but it wasn't because of the AWD system.

By the way I do think that the electronic AWD system may help improve the MPG figures, but it isnt the only factor. Although CVT cars are a bit heavier, they do offer the best gear ratio at any given time and I think the top gear offered is more optimal than the gearing they selected for the 5speed which also accounts for the better MPG overall.

Now if they regeared and offered a 6speed manual? Maybe they would be closer to equal in MPG.

Leave it to a newb to bump a 9 month dead thread. Plus the car has been out for a year already. Good job rookie.

I guess I will use my first ever post (like a good noob should) to restart an old thread.

I like the 2012 model, but the styling could us a little more aggression. I think subaru could increase sales by showing their cars as top performers in a wide range of areas but also looking badass while doing it.

Great first post. But you already knew it was silly to post here. Just so people can hear your opinion that is in my opinion silly. You're saying the car needs to be aggressive. This is a base model impreza! It's not supposed to be aggressive.

99 impreza

99 wrx sti

02 base model rs

02 Jdm sti

08 2.5i

08 sti

2012 impreza

As it's quite clear the base is supposed to be just that.....a base model. Not only that but the 2012 impreza is clearly the best looking impreza. It looks nice and doesn't look like just a cheap base model. It's not supposed to be a "race model" and is supposed to appeal to a wide range of people for sales not just guys buying wrx's and hooking them up.

I have both a 12 WRX and a 12 Impreza hatch
the WRX is mine and the Impreza is my Wife. I will say her car isnt very attractive to me. the interior is a little nicer with more soft touch material compared to my WRX and it displays more info about fuel economy and such I find it odd though it has no coolent temp gauge. Just a blue coolant light that stays lit for first few mins telling you car is cold. the MPG is pretty good she averages about 28mpg in the city. its pretty spunky for only having 140hp. She likes it though we shall see how it does this winter if we get any substantial snow

Taste is a very subjective thing, which is why you can choose from any number of different looking cars that serve different target groups, and all of them are somehow sold to somebody (even the Kia Soul and other boxlike cars have enthusiasts).

The redesigned Impreza is obviously a hit. Many are sold before they hit the lot, and some people are waiting months to get one. I don't think subaru much cares if a small percent of people dislike how the redesign looks. They are more interested that the car is selling out to those who do like how it looks or performs.

If you bought one and you think it is ugly, cry me a river. If you like something else better, get it. There are many cars to choose from that will suit your taste.

Prepare for many to get the vapors when the redesigned WRX and STI hit the market. You can bet your ass that half of the current owners will beat on their chest and moan about the loss of the brand, and the other half will be lining up to trade in their car for the redesigned model.

I actually can't wait to trade my 2008 in on one. In all fairness it is a 2.5i.
