Default rear clutch-type LSD question

I ordered the LSD rebuild kit from rallispec.com. I had my mechanic rebuild the rear LSD in my 06 STI. He packed in an extra set of clutch plates. He did the work back in June of this year. I did approximately 30 minutes of figure-8 to break in the rear LSD.

4 months later, the rear LSD still clucks and chirps in slow corners. Is this normal? Will this damage the centre diff and gearbox?

Thanks for input!

Victor

extra plates = extra lock.

factory plates = factory feel.

Essentially you have made the LSD more aggressive. the clunking/chirping is from a locked diff and the inside wheel skipping around corners.

it shouldnt damage the centre diff (especially an active DCCD diff) or gearbox, but it will put extra strain on the rear end parts especially the CV axles etc.

I put an Auburn diff in my Tundra which is a clutch type LSD, and it does the same thing. Like Loomin said, it's the nature of the more aggressive diff.

It can't be as bad as it was before right?

One of the reason I don't feel like rebuilding my R180 :P I'll probably just swap it out for a torsen unit later on.

Hello all,

Thanks so much for all the useful input and feedback. I am glad to hear the clucking and chirping from the rear clutch-type LSD is normal. I've noticed less clucking and chirping with a recent Motul 90PA Gear Oil change for the LSD.

Victor

ps. Mr. Yang, will you be autocrossing on October 30?

A good fluid is important, but also that you're running the proper friction modifiers. I know that with my diff, I need to run additives blended for use in the rear end.
