Wink Coupla' Cheap 'n easy mods

ok, so I dont actually have a 'life' outside of the car.. so heres how I spent my weekend.. first off, a cheap and easy grill for the intercooler to keep them small mammals, birds, and flying objects out..

I'd buy an existing product, 'cept for the odd side scoop with nowehere to mount grill mesh up to. so I took some of the finest mesh I could buy (only 1/4") and bend/cut it into shape... looks pretty good from the outside too.

I was a little concerned about temp, esp on the turbo side, but then I put some of this plain ol' galvanized metal mesh stuff in the oven for a little testing and holy crap the stuff took 400 degrees for 10 minutes with no discernable effect, and dumped the excess heat in seconds .. pretty cool..

... on to the hard part..

I've been wanting to do a gold star badge mod for a while, but I'll warn anyone who wants to do it, that it was a real pain and isnt anywhere near perfect. plus the cutex fumes are pretty wicked.

How did you do that badge mod? Looks very nice. The only one I've seen is the painting of the background it in a different colour, not the stars.

yep.. 2 q's ... Q-tips (ear wax doohickeys) and Cutex..
the stars (and outer ring) are just pressed foil with the regular black gunk on there. If you can use the q-tip to scrub away the edges (imagine the depressed area cut-away as a U shape, the gunk at the top of the U is keeping the center stuff in, remove this and then you can pull the bottom material out) of the star then you can sorta drill a hole in the center by twirling the q-tip and then pry up the foil and pull it out. Keep the black gunk stuff moist with the nail polish remover while you are pulling the foil out. Be very carefull not to scrape the plastic, as it will look terrible if that happens. Repaint with colors of your choice.. voila.

for your intercooler screen, you might want to consider switching to the aluminum screening that window screens are made from...

will catch a lot of bugs & debris stuff that will fall through 1/4" mesh and mess up IC.

Wouldn't the screen door mesh be to restrictive?

hmm.. I thought about that.. I'd like to see a finer mesh but then it also needs to be made of thick enough material to A: take the hit, b: hold its' shape. perhaps a hybrid mesh on grill solution? I had planned to add some thicker steel rods across the IC vertically to help support the center better also.

..thus began the quest for the ultimate IC screen....

how hard was it to pry the front emblem off? You just used a flathead screwdriver right?

pry from one side and then slip a knife in there to help the goo off the plastic material of the grill.
