Default Stock WRX vs. Mercedes CLK430 Convert.?

One of my friends owns an automatic transmission 2002 Mercedes Benz CLK Convertible...

Relevant info from Edmunds.com:
2002 Mercedes Benz CLK430
Horsepower: 275hp @ 5750 rpm
Torque: 295ft-lbs. @ 3000 rpm
Weight: 3745 lbs.

Although it has vastly more power than the modest WRX (it's a v8 for crying out loud!), it is a lot heavier, and it is an automatic. How do you think it would fare against a stock WRX 5spd sedan?

Relevant info from Edmunds.com:
Subaru Impreza WRX
Horsepower: 227hp @ 6000 rpm
Torque: 217ft-lbs. @ 4000 rpm
Weight: 3085 lbs.

If you take the hp divided by the weight, the Subaru has power to weight ratio of .073581, the Benz has a power to weight of .073431 -- although this is very unscientific, it seems like the WRX would be able to at least give the Benz a challenege if not possibly beat it. (maybe I'll get to race my friend sometime )

Any thoughts?

you calculated your power:weight ratio backwards, but yeah if you can drive worth a $hit you should win it by a car and change.

Thumbs up

It depends on what speeds you race at. Basic thinking is

Slow speed: less weight and traction is a big bonus you will fare well. probably beat him to 70 or 80.
High Speeds: power is everything. You won't stand a chance above 80

So don't race him on the highway.

the CLK costs over $56,000, has a V8 engine and goes 0-60 in 7.2 seconds. 1/4 mile is 15.5 seconds @ 92.7 mph.

what else do you need to know?

here is the source. edmunds auto review.

For some reason edmunds hates mercedes (and apartenly doesnt like subaru) and is all about BMW. They are very biased. They had a 330ci with 225hp and the same weight as a clk430 275hp beating the clk430.

Quote:
For the life of me, I can't figure out how your BMW 330Ci test mule within the Luxury Coupe Comparison bested the 0-60 and quarter-mile times of the similarly muscled and recently road-tested AWD Subaru Impreza WRX, especially given the 300-lb. weight penalty of the former. The significantly stronger and somewhat lighter Mercedes CLK430 was also unable to overcome the [BMW] in either test, even while boasting a power advantage of roughly 50 [horsepower] and 80 ft/lbs. of torque.
That is from hear (near the bottom). Also take a look at their response. http://www.edmunds.com/news/column/l...2/article.html

99 clk 430 non cab 0-60 around 6 sec 1/4 around 14.8 sec
From the few places I found info. I'm doubting the quarter time (car is faster).

so effectivelly between pulling a joke and being serious they do admit that they favor BMW's...

Oh well... the sun must have been down when they tested the WRX. Plus they would match a 330 vs a WRX they are completly different price range. Look at the cars they tested together. when the STi comes and also the EVO VII, they would run them and they will take notice. Plus we all know how easy is mod a WRX and make it much much faster and have a boatload of money to spare.

That said BMW's are very nice track cars. Very nicely balanced. AMG mercedeses have shown at least in the paper and sometimes on the track to be faster than the BMW's But people still have not shed the opinion that BMW are sport sedans and Mercedes is for old people that want a nice car but not a sporty one as well. Tell that to the E55 AMG.

cheers

Nick
