Default Just Moved to SF from Boston

Hey guys, i just moved here, don't really know too much about the city of SF or the bay area in general but i will explore.
Also i just drove 4000 miles to get here so i desperately need an oil change. i set up an appointment for tomorrow at Putnam Subaru in downtown, anything i should know about them?
What are some good shops to take my car if i need work done? I definitely need new rotors, also a clicking noise while turning possibly an axle problem.
Anyway so if anybody sees a wrb bugeye with RS goldies and Mass plates it's probably me.
Also i bought a ticket for Subiefest but after driving cross country, i'm a little worried that my car won't make it to LA and back again in one piece.

Welcome! As far as shops I would check out EQ tuning in Vacaville or LIC motorsports in Novato. Very reputable shops and do great work !

thanks guys. i got the oil change done this morning at the Subaru shop. it was kind of expensive IMO $50? maybe you guys know better.. is that the going rate for an oil change? it was right in downtown SF so maybe that's why. But it was probably worth it just to get the car washed and all cleaned up, it looked like total crap from the long drive.
i'll probably just go with a local mechanic from this point on or do my own oil changes if someone can help me out with a place to do it as i only have street parking where i'm staying at the moment.

Welcome to the Bay Area!!! SF is a great city with a lot of culture diversity!!

And yes, it is also one of the most expensive cities to live in the States as well. So everything will be expensive include OIL Change. $50 is actually OK considering you did it at a dealership.

I can recommend you to go to Auto-Logic in San Bruno (right by SFO) for major repair/services. Use Yelp.com for reviews and directions. Joseph is one of the partners and drives an 04STi. These guys knows their stuff (ASE Certified) and this place is also a smog inspection station. Oh, did I mention they go to a lot of track events too. A bonus!

If you need a car wash, there's DIY car wash places all over downtown SF and outer downtown area. I know there's one on corner of 10th Street/Harrison (SOMA).

Also there's another DIY car wash spot on corner of Collins Street/Geary Blvd (Western Addition/NOPA).

Hope this helps! )

There aren't very many Subaru specialists in San Francisco...at least ones that I know about. But $50 for a full synthetic oil change is a good deal i think.

There are many good Subaru Mechanics outside of SF. AutoHQ in Redwood City, GST Motorsports in Hayward, LIC Motorsports in Novato, Mann Engineering in Santa Clara. AutoHQ is closest to SF - Kevin is really good with our cars.

Check out i-club.com or http://www.i-club.com/forums/bay-area-15/

More BAICers reside there.

Cool, how do you like it so far? Also how long do you plan on staying with the MA plates? I'm currently staying at my friends apartment in the Visitacion Valley area, about 10 minutes west of Candlestick Park. What about you?

ok i haven't ventured into that area yet other than golden gate park.
i was gonna wait until my inspection sticker expires which is in April '12 and do everything then, CA license and registration. Also, my car won't pass smog in it's current state, i would probably have to get a stock converter/downpipe from someone.

also what are the tint laws here? i have 35% all around which is the legal limit in MA. ibLMGTFY

My tints are 20% all around. It was illegal in MA, cant have more than 70% in CA. I will probably register my car when/if I get a fix it ticket *knock on wood*. I dont mess with the engine and exhaust, completely stock. 150k miles. Had my car registered in MA from my parents but definitely got to convert when I get settled. Any luck on insurance quotes?

no i didn't get any quotes yet. i've paid commerce insurance through feb so i'll stick with it until then. i gotta call my insurance agent cuz i'm not sure how it's gonna work.. like will i have to switch my insurance, registration and license all at the same time? not gonna worry about it right now. just enjoying the new city for now.
that's impressive that your car is completely stock at 150k. i don't think i could keep any car completely stock for any period of time unless it was a supercar or something haha.

yea i was tempted, but i wanted to see if the car last longer without messing with any of the engine components. I only upgrade the parts that wore out/broke over time. Like my suspension, changed at 120k miles to 04 STi suspension. Modded the outside and inside of my car for appearance purposes.

If I were you I would hold off on registering in California until you absolutely have to. I don’t know what registration goes for in Massachusetts but they put an extra zero on my bill when I came from New Mexico; plus the hassle of having to deal with inspections, smog, and the attitude and bureaucracy of the CA DMV.

Insurance should be easy if you have a decent company. Just call them up and tell them you have moved; they will not care where the car is registered. Your rate may change but not by much

When I moved out here I had NM plates an Arizona licence and insurance with a local address. No problems until I got a speeding ticket; I told them I had just brought the car over (you are supposed to register within 30 days) and messed around for a few days trying to satisfy what was required to register it.

Welcome and I am sure the purge of your pocket book will continue.

well hello. I'm going to jump in on this pig-pile of people who just moved to SF area from Boston. I was in Salem MA and now I'm in Foster City, CA.

Sadly it seems I'll have to get rid of my turbo back exhaust...one, because it's not carb legal, and two, because it's too loud for the townhouse community I live in Back to essentially stock. So sad.

Just got here yesterday, though, so I haven't had much time to explore, just found a grocery store and a Target. The wife is going to the DMV to get her new license and plates, while I have to wait for the movers to get here so I can put my stock exhaust back on and then deal with all that stuff myself. Fun

Even though it sounds like many of you are in the city, maybe we can arrange a meet-up. I'm going to suggest an in-n-out somewhere, just because that place friggen rules.

And if you know anybody who wants a new loud exhaust, let me know!

Coming from Mass, I can say there's at least one thing cheaper here than there... insurance. MA insurance is gov't regulated, and thus super expensive compared to everywhere else. My wife's premium through USAA dropped in half ($1,200/yr to now $600/yr) and my premium with Amica dropped from $1,400/yr to $1,000/yr.

So I'll take it! Everything else about it is going to suck, though, I'm sure.

wow seems like quite a few subie lovers moving to the bay area.. nice!
so i've noticed that in the city of SF, there are not too many Subies.. maybe i'm just used to seeing alot coming from New England.
i guess i'll just have to accept the fact that Subies are not very popular here.
