2002 PSM wrx build

alright, so here it is, i know it is the most common and general build but im doing it for my senior project. ive been working on it on and off for about a month and a half now. due to my lack of income, its going at a slow rate. Hopefully within a week i will have my heads sent off to aluminum heads in Portland, Oregon to be rebuilt, and after that hopefully this process will pick up. Most of the internals im replacing will be oem parts, plus a few bolt on bits.

here's a few pictures before engine pull..

Heres just a few more random ones while i shot disassembling the block

i did run into a couple obstacles while dissassembling the engine, one of the main points was getting the cam gears/pulleys off, they are a PITA. they are supposed to be torqued to ~70 ft/lbs iirc. but that is not the case. the way that i was able to get them off is weld a bolt to the allenhead bolt and use an impact wrench, although a lot of people believe that is highly unsafe and whatever, its what i did and work. There are a couple threads about it b/c it seems to be an issue when tearing these engines apart.

UPDATE: got the heads sent off today, should be back in about a week or so! things are moving along!

You plan on running a hybrid setup?? I have an 03' bugeye Hybrid with vf43.. Nice numbers and gobbbsssss of torque.. No point on keeping the 2L when you can up the displacement for the same $$$ Just my 02

Actually im just rebuilding the 2.0 for now

completely understand where you're coming from though. i still have to worry about my tranny though, shes got about 178,XXX on the original tranny. i do plan on going stage 2 plus some, then turbo upgrade and supporting mods. what're you running for your tranny?

What's with the piston on the left? Is it just the camera or does the piston seem deformed?

Ohh yeah.. The 02-03 box is like fine china.. My current tranny utilizes an 03 case with 06 wrx gears.. Final drive matched for my rear end.. I've been through 2 stockers before this setup.. The reason I keep going to the 5spd is that I'm piecing together the 6spd slowly but surely, and it was pretty cheap to fix (friends with bench time skills) the two that broke.. #1 ring gear, #2 made swiss cheese of 3rd.. Hopefully my setup will last until I finalize my swap. That is why I'm only running a vf43..

hahah now that you say that i know what your lookin at. the piston is just sitting lower in the cylinder and there are waves reflecting off the walls but the smaller circle inside is the piston.

haha yeah thats just the camera, its not exactly a top of the line camera by any means. but now that you mention it, it does look deformed in the picture, never really noticed that. hmmm

yeah i have no idea what im going to do when she goes, its like a ticking time bomb right now. i was thinking maybe some LGT gears when mine go. i was gonna say earlier you could run a bigger turbo with your hybrid setup but i totally get why you dont, i mean 02-03 gear boxes arent exactly the best.

sorry guys i havent updated this thread in a while ive just gotten sidetracked with school and work and what not. but not to worry im getting back into it ordering more parts/putting her back together slowly but surely. heres a few pics of it lately, comments are welcome positive or negative, im just a newb learing as i go so any advice is greatly appreciated
